Director of Recreation and Athletics
Andrew Beattie has announced the appointment of
Peter Oviatt to the role of outdoor track & field head coach at The Evergreen State College.
Oviatt brings to Evergreen experience as a high school, collegiate and club coach in both track & field and cross country.
Since 2010, Oviatt has served as head coach of the Tesseract Running Club in Bellingham, Wash. He founded Tesseract as a youth running club in 2010, but in the intervening years it has grown to include elite level and post-collegiate runners. Tesseract youth runners have set one age group world record, earned numerous All-America honors and gone on to compete at the collegiate level.
Oviatt served as altitude advisor and coach for the New Jersey/New York Track Club during Olympic Trials preparation in May and June 2016, and for three years prior to that (2012-15) was head cross country and track & field coach at Skagit Valley College. He also coached at the high school level in Washington and Connecticut, in addition to directing the Connecticut Running Camp from 2008-12.
A California native, Oviatt was a cross country All-American and two-time Scholar-Athlete of the Year during three seasons at Humboldt State and the conference cross country runner-up and a scholar-athlete while at Utah State. He continues to compete in Master's level events and was the USATF/PNW Trail Half-marathon Masters Champion in 2010.
"Ever since I started to coach, my goal has been to coach at the four-year college level," Oviatt said. "This is so exciting to have my first four-year coaching job, and having already seen the number of students on the roster, as well as their ability, I couldn't be happier."
