WOMEN'S BASKETBALL NOTES:Â The Evergreen State College, in search of the final spot in the Cascade Collegiate Conference postseason tournament, travels to Portland, Ore., this weekend for games against the Warner Pacific Knights on Friday and the Multnomah Lions on Saturday. Tipoff for both contests is 5:30 p.m.
FOLLOW THE GEODUCKS:Â Evergreen fans unable to attend Geoducks games, whether at home or on the road, can follow the action via live stats and/or a live video stream by clicking on the stats and video links under the Events tab on www.gogeoducks.com. John Hammargren provides the play-by-play for Evergreen home games.
PLAYOFF PICTURE: For the Geoducks, who are 6-19 overall and 5-13 in the conference, the eighth-and-final spot in the Cascade Collegiate Conference postseason tournament will be determined on the final night of the regular season. Going into the weekend, Evergreen and Multnomah (which hosts Northwest University on Friday) are tied for eighth place in the conference standings. Should either team win both of its contests this weekend, that team will advance to the tournament. There are other scenarios that will determine the final playoff berth but a bottom-line fact is that the Geoducks will play in the postseason by defeating Multnomah on Saturday. That would give Evergreen - by sweeping Multnomah this season - the playoff tiebreaker advantage. Should the teams end in a tie in the standings with Multnomah beating Evergreen on Saturday, then the Lions would receive the final playoff spot by virtue of the Sempert System (point system based on home and away wins and losses and opponent record). So while Friday's games are important, the Saturday showdown will be key. The CCC tournament starts Tuesday, Feb. 21, with four quarterfinal contests.
GEODUCKS BY THE NUMBERS: Senior post
Gabi Fenumiai leads the team with averages of 13.8 points and 8.4 rebounds per game, and she is among the CCC leaders with 59 percent field goal shooting accuracy. The team's other senior, post
Autumn Moorcroft, has increased her scoring average to 10.2 points per game, and she adds 5.9 rebounds per contest to the cause. Freshman point guard
Zaria Jones averages 8.5 points and 3.4 assists per game, junior guard
Corina Tacardon adds 6.2 points and 1.8 steals per game, and junior guard
Kylie Gorton chips in 5.1 rebounds per contest.
FENUMIAI ON FIRE: After a slow start, senior post
Gabi Fenumiai has returned very close to the form that saw her average 17.5 points and 8.0 rebounds per game during the 2015-16 season. She ranks among the NAIA Division II women's basketball leaders in three categories – she ranks 17th with a .559 field goal percentage, is tied for 18th with 10 double-doubles, and is 28th nationally with an average of 8.4 rebounds per contest.
RECORD SETTERS: No matter what happens over the remaining games,
Gabi Fenumiai will own the Evergreen women's basketball program record for career field goal shooting percentage. She enters the final three games of the regular season with a .556 mark, which compares to the .464 percentage compiled by Brittany Gray from 2013-15.
ABOUT WARNER PACIFIC:Â The Knights have had a difficult season with a 4-24 overall record, including a 2-16 mark in the conference. Guard Bailey Allen leads the team with 12.3 points and 3.1 assists per game, while forward Kyeli Hendryx adds 12.2 points and a team-best 8.1 rebounds per contest. Guard Darbi Pink shoots 37 percent from beyond the three-point line, which contributes nicely to her 9.7 point per game. Warner Pacific is 2-10 on its home court this season.
FIRST MEETING: Gabi Fenumiai tallied 27 points and nine rebounds,
Autumn Moorcroft scored 16 points and
Zaria Jones added 10 assists to lead Evergreen to a 74-64 win over Warner Pacific on Dec. 10 inside Costantino Recreation Center.
RECENT RESULTS: Going back to the 2007-08 season, Warner Pacific has won 12 of the 19 meetings between the two teams, including 68-57 and 74-43 decisions last season. Evergreen swept the Knights during the 2014-15 campaign by 59-51 and 68-57 scores.
ABOUT MULTNOMAH: The Lions, 7-19 overall and 5-13 in the conference, are led by guard Miranda Schmillen and her 14.3 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. Schmillen is an excellent shooter, hitting 46 percent of her shots overall and 44 percent from beyond the three-point line. Forward Lacie Kamper has started all 26 games and averages 8.1 points and 5.0 rebounds for the Lions, who are 3-8 on their home floor this season.
LAST YEAR: The Geoducks swept then conference-newcomer Multnomah last season, opening conference play with an 82-76 road victory and closing the campaign with a 90-61 win in Costantino Recreation Center.
EVERGREEN 102, WALLA WALLA 68: The Geoducks set a single-game scoring record in defeating the visiting Walla Walla Wolves, 102-68, in a conference game played last Sunday afternoon inside Costantino Recreation Center. The former single-game scoring record of 98 points came in a win over Walla Walla on Jan. 17, 2016. It was a great day for Evergreen's two seniors who were honored following the contest.
Gabi Fenumiai tallied 34 points (second highest single-game total in Evergreen history) and 10 rebounds for her 10th double-double of the season, and
Autumn Moorcroft registered a career-high 26 points to go along with 11 rebounds for her third double-double of the campaign. She added to an outstanding overall game with six assists.
