MEN'S BASKETBALL NOTES: The Evergreen State College plays its final home game of the 2016-17 season at 4 p.m. Sunday when the Walla Walla University Wolves visit Costantino Recreation Center.
SENIOR DAY: A trio of Evergreen seniors –
Taylor Drey,
Jonathan Jack-Nixon (JJ Nixon) and
Jarrick Mitchell – will be honored prior to playing their final home game. Mitchell played three seasons for the Geoducks, while Drey and Jack-Nixon are two-year team members. Drey came to Evergreen from Lower Columbia College, Jack-Nixon from Whatcom CC and Mitchell from Green River CC.
FOLLOW THE GEODUCKS:Â Evergreen fans unable to attend Geoducks games, whether at home or on the road, can follow the action via live stats and/or a live video stream by clicking on the stats and video links under the Events tab on www.gogeoducks.com. John Hammargren provides the play-by-play for all Evergreen home basketball games.
PLAYOFF PICTURE: Evergreen, 6-17 overall and 3-14 in the conference standings is still in the hunt for the last of eight Cascade Collegiate Conference postseason tournament berths. Warner Pacific currently holds the eighth spot with five wins, and Evergreen defeated the Knights during the opening weekend of the season. To stay in the tournament hunt, the Geoducks must win all three of their remaining regular season games. After Sunday's home contest against Walla Walla, Evergreen plays at Warner Pacific on Friday, Feb. 18, and at Multnomah on Saturday, Feb. 19. In addition to beating Warner Pacific, the Geoducks need for the Knights to lose at least two of their other four remaining games. The Geoducks could still lose one of their remaining three games, but Warner Pac would have to lose all four on its schedule. The CCC tournament begins with quarterfinal round action on Wednesday, Feb. 22.
GEODUCKS BY THE NUMBERS: Evergreen has been solid in the rebounding category all season and literally has the same number of rebounds – 888 – as its opponents through 23 games. In terms of scoring, the Geoducks average 76.1 points per game while allowing 84.0. Senior guard
Taylor Drey is the scoring leader with 16.1 points per game, followed by junior post
Shawn Spencer at 13.5. Both Spencer (.576) and sophomore post
Ryan Quigley (.517) rank among the conference leaders in field goal shooting percentage. Quigley and Spencer have been switching back and forth in terms of top rebounder, Spencer leading with 6.3 per game and Quigley right behind at 6.1. Senior point guard
Jarrick Mitchell is among the conference leaders with an average of 5.9 assists per game. The team's other starter, sophomore forward
Dalton Groenewold, averages 8.7 points and 4.8 boards per contest.
RECORD BREAKER: With five more assists,
Jarrick Mitchell will establish a new Evergreen men's basketball program record for most assists in a season. He has 136 assists this season and should eclipse the record of 140 established by Karriem Fielding during the 2003-04 season. In addition, Mitchell will set a new program record for assists per game.
ABOUT WALLA WALLA: The Wolves have two conference wins to their credit and one came at the hands of the Geoducks in Walla Walla. Despite a 3-21 overall record, including a 2-14 mark in the conference, the Wolves are among the best shooters in the league with an overall percentage of .450 and a .357 mark from beyond the three-point line. They score an average of 74.2 points per game while allowing 94.9. Alec Calloway, a junior post, is the team leader with 13.1 points and 5.3 rebounds per game, and he hits slightly better than half of his shots. The other top scorers are brothers – junior wing Dylan Browning at 10.5 points per game and freshman wing Zayne Browning at 9.5 per contest.
FIRST MEETING: The Wolves made 15 three-point baskets in 24 attempts and shot 60 percent overall in registering an 86-77 victory over visiting Evergreen on Jan. 15. While the Wolves lit it up from beyond the three-point line, the Geoducks shot just 6-for-26 from long range.

NORTHWEST CHRISTIAN 104, EVERGREEN 90: Dalton Groenewold scored an Evergreen career-high 24 points but it wasn't enough last Friday night to prevent No. 8-ranked Northwest Christian from walking out of Costantino Recreation Center with a 104-90 conference victory over the Geoducks.
EVERGREEN 80, CORBAN 77: Evergreen put an end to a 13-game losing streak last Saturday night inside Costantino Recreation Center, beating the visiting Corban Warriors, 80-77. The Geoducks enjoyed balanced scoring with six different players scoring in double figures.
