The Evergreen State College Athletics

A 1985 graduate of The Evergreen State College, John Purtteman enters his 13th season as men's soccer head coach at his alma mater after taking the reins in 2006 following two years as an assistant coach.

John has compiled an 89-92-27 record in 12 seasons, earning Cascade Conference Coach of the Year honors in 2012 and 2016. His 2015 team finished 13-3-2, the .778 winning percentage establishing a new Evergreen men's soccer single-season record.

In addition to his coaching responsibilities, John serves as Assistant Director for Intercollegiate Athletics.

After twice earning Evergreen men's soccer MVP recognition, John played professionally for the Portland Pride, Seattle Seadogs, Florida Thundercats and Denver Thunder, twice being named to the Continental Indoor Soccer League All-Star team.

Following his retirement, John broke into the coaching ranks at South Puget Sound Community College, leading the Clippers to a 15-5-3 record and a berth in the NWAACC finals in 2004.

In addition to his work with the Evergreen men’s team, John directed the women’s program from 2007-2009. He also previously served as coaching director of the South Sound Select youth program, and as head coach of the Tacoma Stars Indoor Soccer Team.

John and his wife, Sonja, live in Olympia with their son.
