Evergreen Hands Pacific Lutheran 75-65 Defeat

Box Score PARKLAND - Jordan Dam scored 16 points and Landon Rushton added 15 off the bench Wednesday night to lead the Evergreen Geoducks to a 75-65 non-conference men's basketball win over the host Pacific Lutheran Lutes at The Names Family Court.

With the victory the Geoducks improve to 3-5, while the loss drops the Lutes to 2-5.

Dam and Rushton, who scored a career high total, were two of the five Evergreen players to score in double figures. The other three players - Frankie Johnson, Kortney Darby and Alix Hernandez - all finished with 10.

The Geoducks, who have been outrebounded by an average of 12 per game, won the battle of the boards against the taller Lutes, 41-33, with Hernandez taking down eight and Darby grabbing seven.

Evergreen shot 42 percent (25-for-59) from the field, with 27 of their shots coming from beyond the three-point line. They knocked down nine of those, including a 3-for-4 effort from Rushton. Additionally, the Geoducks committed just 11 turnovers, one above their average.

Brandon Lester drained a trio of three-point shots to score a game-high 18 points for the hosts.

The Geoducks came into the game averaging 85 points per game to just 58 for the Lutes, so the plan was to get the hosts playing at a quicker tempo. That didn't happen in the early going, however, because the visitors had trouble finding the range from the field.

PLU led 8-4 through nearly eight minutes of action before Evergreen finally got untracked. Hernandez and Johnson scored layups and Rushton drained his first triple of the night, all within one minute, to put Evergreen on top, 11-8, with 11:19 to play in the half. The Geoducks never again trailed.

They took their first double-digit lead of the night at 27-16 on a layup by Dam with 4:02 on the clock and they went to the intermission with a 39-26 advantage.

After falling behind by 15 points to open the second half, Pacific Lutheran put up one final push at making a game of it. A six-point run make the score 46-41 in favor of the visitors with 13 1/2 minutes to play, but that was as close as it got.

Evergreen plays another non-conference opponent on Friday when it hosts the Pacific Boxers. Tipoff has been moved up one-half hour to 7:30 p.m. in CRC Gymnasium.
