Sackrider Earns 16 Points and 9 Boards in Loss to PLU

OLYMPIA, Wash. -- Jalyn Sackrider (Sr., G/F) scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds for The Evergreen State College in a 60-46 loss to Pacific Lutheran University on Sunday, Nov. 17 at the Costantino Recreation Center. The Lutes improved to 1-2 on the season, while Evergreen moved to 0-2.

Sackrider provided the Geoducks with a solid all-around game. In addition to leading the team in scoring and rebounding, she blocked two shots, earned two steals, and was credited with one assist. Mikail Montez (Sr., F/C) added 11 points and five boards for Evergreen, while Allison DeBerry (Sr., G) supplied eight points, three assists, and three steals. Sydney VanNess (Sr., G/F) hauled down seven rebounds.

Kasidy Javernick topped Pacific Lutheran with 16 points and five steals. She was 4 of 8 on 3-point shots. Sydney Reisner supplied the Lutes with 11 points, while Ashley Akamine finished with 10 points and six boards. Stacie Spahr led all players with 18 rebounds. 

Evergreen led 4-2 following a layup by Sackrider. The game was tied at 8-8 before PLU moved in front 11-8 on a 3-pointer by Taylor Schmidtke at the 4:11 mark. Sackrider added a jumper for the Geoducks with 2:48 left in the quarter to pull within one point. The Lutes ended the quarter with an 8-4 run and took a 19-14 lead into the second quarter.

The Geoducks tallied the first four points of the second quarter on a jumper by Sackrider and a pair of free throws by DeBerry. Pacific Lutheran countered with a 12-0 run to expand the margin to 31-18 with 5:20 remaining in the half. The run featured two 3-pointers by Javernick and a traditional three-point play by Akamine. Evergreen added a jumper from Sackrider and a layup by Montez to cut the lead to 31-22 with 3:33 on the clock. PLU scored six of the next nine points to grab a 37-25 margin at halftime.

Spahr earned the first basket of the third quarter for the Lutes, but Evergreen answered with a 6-0 offensive surge to pull within 39-31 with 6:14 to go. Honey Let Padasdao (Sr., G) started the run with a steal and layup, Montez tacked on two free throws, and DeBerry added another steal and layup. Pacific Lutheran ended the quarter with a 46-33 advantage.

After scoring the final four points of the third period, the Lutes went on a 5-0 run to start the fourth quarter for a 51-33 lead. The Geoducks followed up with an 8-0 surge of their own to reduce the margin to 51-41 at the 3:22 mark. Sackrider registered four points while DeBerry and Montez each added two points during the run. 

Akamine of PLU hit a 3-point basket with 2:54 on the clock to give the Lutes a 54-41 lead. A layup by Padasdao and a 3-pointer by Montez helped TESC pull within 55-46 with 28 seconds left, but PLU hit 5 of 8 free throws the rest of the way to secure the win. 

Evergreen will play a scrimmage against Edmonds Community College at the Costantino Recreation Center on Thursday, Nov. 21 at 4 p.m. PST. The Geoducks will play an exhibition game at NCAA Division I foe Seattle University on Saturday, Nov. 23. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
