Sydney VanNess (Sr., G/F) led The Evergreen State College with 13 points and six rebounds against NCAA Division I opponent the University of Montana in a women's basketball game on Tuesday, Nov. 26. VanNess was one of three Geoducks in double figures. Montana defeated Evergreen, 107-56.Â
The game was an exhibition for the Geoducks, who remained 0-2 on the season. It was a regular season game for Montana, which improved to 4-3.
VanNess was 3 of 8 on 3-point shots. In addition to VanNess, other Evergreen players in double figures were
Jalyn Sackrider (Sr., G/F) with 11 points and
Kadance Blankers (Jr., G) with 10 points. Sackrider also grabbed four rebounds and led all players on both teams with four blocked shots. She fouled out after playing 21 minutes.
Mikail Montez (Sr., F/C) supplied Evergreen with nine points, while
Allison DeBerry (Sr., G) earned five points, five rebounds, six assists, and one blocked shot. VanNess and Blankers each contributed two assists.
Montana's top scorer was Tyler McCliment-Call, who produced 27 points on 9-of-11 shooting. She was 5 for 7 on 3-point shots and went 4 for 4 at the free throw line. McCliment-Call grabbed five rebounds and finished with two assists.
Three Lady Griz players -- Adria Lincoln, Izabella Zingaro, and Aby Shubert --Â each added 12 points. Lincoln hauled down four boards and was 5 for 5 on free throws. Zingaro was credited with five boards. Shubert hit 4 of 8 shots from 3-point range. Alex Pirog tacked on nine points and led all players with 13 rebounds.
Evergreen was 23 of 73 from the field (31.5%), including 7 for 23 (30.4%) on 3-pointers. The Lady Griz went 41 of 79 on field goals (51.9%), while converting 12 of 31 long-range shots (38.7%). Montana went 13 for 15 on free throws.
The Lady Griz zoomed out to a 28-5 lead at the end of the first quarter and owned a 59-25 advantage at halftime. Montana outscored the Geoducks 21-13 in the third quarter and 27-18 in the fourth quarter.
Sackrider scored Evergreen's first basket to pull within 3-2 with 6:58 left in the first quarter. The Lady Griz tallied the next eight points. A layup be Montez cut Montana's lead to 11-4.
Montana added the next four points on baskets by MJ Bruno and McCliment-Call before a free throw by DeBerry cut the margin to 15-5 with 3:29 to go in the quarter. Montana ended the opening period with a 13-0 run. The offensive surge began with one 3-pointer each by Bruno and McCliment-Call.
Evergreen will host Walla Walla University on Friday, Dec. 6 in the Cascade Collegiate Conference opener. Game time is set for 12 p.m. PST at the Costantino Recreation Center.
