Sackrider Earns Double-Double, but Eagles Win 70-65

OLYMPIA, Wash. -- Jalyn Sackrider (Sr., F/C) provided The Evergreen State College with a strong game, but Northwest University held off the Geoducks 70-65 in a Cascade Collegiate Conference game on Tuesday, Dec. 10 at the Costantino Recreation Center. Sackrider accumulated a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds, plus seven blocked shots. Kaleah Madeiros led Northwest with 19 points.

The Eagles advanced their record to 3-6 on the season, 2-1 in the CCC. Evergreen moved to 1-4 overall, 1-2 in the CCC.

Sackrider was one of three Geoducks in double figures. Sydney VanNess (Sr., G/F) supplied 13 points to go with six boards and four assists, while Mikail Montez (Sr., F/C) added 11 points and five rebounds. Montez was 5 for 9 from the field.

Allison DeBerry (Sr., G) finished with nine points and six boards for Evergreen. Honey Let Padasdao (Sr., G) earned nine points and five rebounds. VanNess and DeBerry each went 4 for 4 at the free throw line, where Evergreen was 11 of 13.

Following Madeiros on the NU scoring chart was Kimberly Carrada Sanchez with 15 points to go with seven steals and four assists. Ellie De Waard produced 14 points and a game-high 13 rebounds for the Eagles.  She also earned four assists. Katie Snow hauled down nine rebounds, helping Northwest achieve a 46-40 margin on the glass.

Neither team held a lead of more than two points in the first quarter until back-to-back jumpers by Thuyvi Tran (Sr., G) and Sackrider gave Evergreen a 13-10 advantage with 3:40 on the clock. A 3-pointer by Kamil Febo-Santiago tied the game for Northwest, and a layup by Carrada Sanchez put the Eagles in front 15-13. Evergreen added baskets by Montez and Sackrider to end the quarter with a 17-15 lead.

The Geoducks opened the second quarter with a 5-2 run to grab a 22-17 advantage after Sackrider completed a traditional three-point play. The Eagles rebounded to claim a 24-22 advantage on a 3-pointer by Snow with 6:00 left in the half. Later, Sackrider put TESC in front 28-26 lead. The lead changed three more times before the break. A 3-pointer by Beatrice Simon of NU with 47 seconds to go gave the Eagles a 34-32 halftime lead.

Northwest increased the margin to 39-32 early in the third quarter with a jumper by Carrada Sanchez and a 3-pointer by Madeiros. Evergreen rallied to tie the score at 39-39 on a layup by Padasdao at the 4:35 mark. The teams were tied five more times during the quarter. A layup by Madeiros with five seconds left created a 50-50 deadlock.

The Eagles tallied the first 12 points of the fourth period for a 62-50 lead at the 8:09 mark. The scoring surge included a pair of 3-pointers by Waard and one 3-pointer by Madeiros. Evergreen eventually pulled within 66-57 on a 3-pointer by DeBerry with 2:36 to go. The Geoducks got as close as seven points three times, in the final minute, and pulled with 70-65 on a layup by Montez with one second left.

Evergreen shot 38.5% for the game (25 of 65), while Northwest hit 27 of 72 from the field (37.5%). The Geoducks held a 7-4 edge in blocked shots.

The next game for Evergreen will be against Warner Pacific University on Friday, Dec. 20 at the CRC. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. PST.
