OLYMPIA, Wash. -- The Evergreen State College received double-doubles from
Jalyn Sackrider (Sr., F/C) and
Sydney VanNess (Sr., G/F) on Saturday, Dec. 21, but Multnomah defeated the Geoducks 79-71 in a Cascade Collegiate Conference women's basketball game. Sackrider tied a career-high with 26 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, while VanNess produced 19 points and 14 boards.
Three Multnomah players scored in double figures, led by Jersey Huerta with a game-high 33 points. Reya Lee registered 14 points and Gracie Browning added 12 points. The win at the Costantino Recreation Center improved the Lions to 5-6 overall, 3-2 in the CCC. Evergreen dropped to 1-6 on the season, 1-4 in the CCC.
Sackrider previously scored 26 points against Walla Walla University on Nov. 30, 2023. Against Multnomah on Saturday, she was 10 of 18 on field goals and also contributed three assists.
Mikail Montez (Sr., F/C) scored seven points to go with three assists and three boards.
Huerta was 10 of 15 from the floor and 11 for 11 at the free throw line for Multnomah. She finished with five boards, five assists, and three steals. Browning led the Lions with nine rebounds.
Multnomah shot 40.7% on field goals (24 of 59) and made 10 of 31 three-point attempts (32.3%). The Lions were 21 of 23 (91.3%) at the free throw line. Evergreen connected on 25 of 66 field goals (37.9%), including 6 of 21 from 3-point range (28.6%). The Geoducks finished 15 for 23 on free throws (65.2%). Evergreen outrebounded Multnomah 46-30.
The Lions surged out to a 13-4 lead following a 3-point basket by Huerta with 3:38 left in the first quarter. Multnomah extended the margin to 22-8 on a layup with 46 seconds on the clock. Sackrider sank a 3-point shot 10 seconds later to pull Evergreen within 22-11 at the end of the quarter.
A layup by VanNess at the 8:57 mark of the second quarter reduced the margin to 23-15. The Lions gradually increased the lead and owned a 43-24 advantage at halftime.
Evergreen began a rally in the third quarter after Multnomah took a 57-31 lead on a 3-pointer by Lee with 5:52 to go. A 3-pointer by VanNess opened the rally, which pulled the Geoducks within 61-54 at the end of the quarter. When VanNess put in a layup with 7:40 left in the game, she completed a 25-4 run.
Ellie Robertson scored next for Multnomah on a jump shot to give the Lions a 63-56 edge. Evergreen eventually moved as close as 65-63 on a jumper by Sackrider at the 5:24 mark. A jumper from Huerta started a 6-0 run for Multnomah, as the Lions grabbed a 71-63 edge with 3:50 remaining. The Geoducks added a 3-pointer by
Honey Let Padasdao (Sr., G) to move within five points, but never got closer in the closing minutes.
The Geoducks will be back in action on Friday, Jan. 3 with a game at Southern Oregon University. The CCC game is set to begin at 5:30 p.m. PST.
