LEWISTON, Idaho -- Lewis-Clark State College, ranked #19 in the NAIA, controlled the second and third quarters as the Warriors defeated The Evergreen State College 76-42, in a Cascade Collegiate Conference women's basketball game on Friday, Jan. 24.
Mikail Montez (Sr., F/C) led the Geoducks with 10 points, five assists and four rebounds.
Sydney VanNess (Sr., G/F) also scored 10 points to go with four boards and two assists.
The Warriors upped their record to 15-4 on the season, 9-4 in the CCC. Evergreen slipped to 3-11 overall, 3-9 in the CCC.
Lewis-Clark State owned a slim 14-12 lead at the end of the first quarter, but the Warriors outscored Evergreen 23-6 in the second quarter to build a 37-18 advantage at halftime. In the third quarter, LCSC pulled away with a 22-9 scoring edge. In the fourth quarter, the Warriors earned a 17-15 scoring edge.
Montez was 4 of 7 from the field with one 3-pointer for the Geoducks. In addition to offensive and rebounding success, she registered two steals and blocked one shot. VanNess was 4 for 8 on field goals and hit two 3-pointers. She was credited with one steal.
Jalyn Sackrider (Sr., F/C) provided Evergreen with seven points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Honey Let Padasdao (Sr., G) added six points and two assists.
Lewis-Clark State was paced by Ellie Sander, who scored 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting, and 2-of-4 accuracy from 3-point range. She also contributed four rebounds, and two assists, two blocks, and two steals. Payton Hymas contributed 10 points and three steals. Three Warriors -- Sitara Byrd, Mataya Green, and Darian Herring -- each grabbed six rebounds.
A 3-pointer by Hymas and a jumper from Sander gave LCSC a 5-0 lead one minute into the game. Evergreen scored the next six points as DeBerry, Sackrider, and VanNess earned baskets to give the Geoducks a 6-5 lead with 6:29 remaining in the quarter. Later, Evergreen held a 12-9 margin on a 3-pointer by VanNess at the 2:12 mark. Lewis-Clark State concluded the quarter with a 5-0 run.
The Warriors opened the second quarter with a 10-1 surge that included a 3-pointer and a jumper by Sander. The 24-13 lead was reduced to a six-point margin after the Geoducks received a 3-pointer from
Thuyvi Tran (Sr., G) with 5:06 left and a layup by DeBerry with 4:42 on the clock. Lewis-Clark State responded by tallying the final 13 points of the half. Sander scored 14 points during the first half -- seven in each quarter -- for the Warriors.
Lewis-Clark State's 22-9 advantage in the third quarter provided the Warriors with a 59-27 lead. In the fourth quarter, Padasdao and Montez each hit a 3-pointer in the first minute, but the Geoducks couldn't overcome LCSC's margin. Montez recorded eight points in the fourth quarter for Evergreen, while Kendall Wallace led the Warriors with six points.
Evergreen shot 32.7% for the game (17 of 52), while sinking 6 of 19 three-point attempts (31.6%). LCSC was 31 of 63 from the field (49.2%), including 8 of 22 (36.4%) on 3-pointers. The Warriors achieved a 41-28 rebounding edge.
The Geoducks will take on Walla Walla University in a CCC game in Walla Walla, Washington, on Saturday, Jan. 25. The game will be played at Walla Walla Community College with tipoff set for 6:30 p.m.
