LEWISTON, Idaho -- The Evergreen State College battled #21-ranked Lewis-Clark State College until the final buzzer before falling 85-83 in men's basketball action on Friday, Jan. 24. LCSC led by three points with 13 seconds to go, but Evergreen had a chance to tie the game with one second left.
After the Cascade Collegiate Conference game, the Warriors were 14-5 overall, including 9-4 in the CCC. The Geoducks fell to 1-14 overall, 1-11 in the CCC.
Evergreen tied the game at 82-82 with 1:00 remaining in the game on a jump shot by
Solomon Campbell (Jr., F). The Warriors broke the tie when John Lustig put through a layup with 40 seconds on the clock.
Jourdan Joseph (Sr., G) of Evergreen missed a 3-point shot with 22 seconds left. Teammate
Jamoi Davis (Jr., W) grabbed the rebound for the Geoducks, but missed a shot with 15 seconds to play. Alton Hamilton of LCSC hauled down the rebound and was fouled. Hamilton hit the first of two free throws to give the Warriors an 85-82 lead.
Joseph attempted a 3-pointer in the closing seconds and was fouled on the shot by Lustig. Joseph went to the line with one second on the clock to take three free throws. He sank the first foul shot, but missed the second and third free throws, as Lewis-Clark State held on for the win.
The Geoducks were led in scoring by Joseph with 23 points, including a trio of 3-point shots. He also supplied TESC with four rebounds and a steal.
Bradley Graham (Jr., G) finished with 19 points and was 7 for 10 on field goals, while hitting 3 of 4 three-point attempts. Evergreen was 31 of 60 from the field (51.7%) and 12 for 23 (52.2%) on 3-pointers.
Campbell added 12 points for the Geoducks while connecting on 5 of 6 shots. Davis led the team with 11 rebounds to go with seven points.
Tyler No (So., G) scored eight points. Evergreen outrebounded Lewis-Clark State 30-28.
Hamilton topped LCSC with 19 points. He was 7 of 11 on field goals and led the Warriors with nine rebounds. Lustig produced 15 points, five boards and four assists. Taden King and Kasen Carpenter each tallied 11 points while making 3 of 6 three-point tries. Dylan Skaife also hit three 3-pointers.The Warriors connected on 35 of 55 shots (60.0%) and converted 10 of 23 shots (43.5%) from 3-point range.
Evergreen shot out to a 9-2 lead on two 3-pointers by Joseph, plus a trio of foul shots by Joseph when he was fouled on another long-range attempt. A bit later, the Geoducks were in front 11-6 following a jumper by Graham with 12:56 left in the half.
Lewis-Clark State grabbed a 12-11 lead at the 11:32 mark on a layup by Jayce Smith, but the Geoducks eventually built a 19-14 advantage on two free throws by Graham with 9:43 to play. Both teams held leads over the remainder of the opening half. Evergreen owned a 44-40 edge at the break after Joseph made a jump shot with three seconds remaining.
The Geoducks extended their lead to 53-45 following a 3-pointer from Davis with 17:30 to go. Later, a 3-pointer by
Garret Long (Jr., G/W) gave TESC a 58-49 lead at the 14:58 mark. LCSC pulled within 64-59 with 11:52 left and eventually tied the score at 66-66 on a layup by Smith with 9:10 on the clock.
Over the final nine minutes, the game stayed close with six more ties and three lead changes. Evergreen trailed 80-76Â with 2:27 to play following a layup by King. The Geoducks tied the game with a jumper by Joseph and a layup by Campbell. After LCSC took an 82-80 advantage on a layup by Hamilton, Campbell tied the score with his layup at the 1:00 mark.
Evergreen will battle Walla Walla University on Saturday, Jan. 25 in Walla Walla, Washington. The game is set for 8:30 p.m. at Walla Walla Community College.
