Evergreen Loses to Walla Walla 1-0 on Goal in Second Half

OLYMPIA, Wash. -- Walla Walla University scored the game's only goal early in the second half, as the Wolves defeated The Evergreen State College 1-0 on Friday, Oct. 17 at Geoduck Pitch. Evergreen competed with 10 players over the final 66:43 following a red card ejection in the first half.

WWU advanced its record to 2-5-0 overall and to 2-5-0 in the Cascade Collegiate Conference. Evergreen dropped to 1-8-2, including 1-5-2 in the CCC.

Evergreen's Jonas Olvera Calderon (Sr., D) received a red card in the 24th minute. A total of three cards were issued at the time, with Lewys Scott of Walla Walla and Kainoa Wong (Sr., F) of the Geoducks each receiving a yellow card.

The Geoducks, although reduced to 10 players, kept the game scoreless during the rest of the first half. Even so, Walla Walla owned an 11-0 edge in shots at the break.

WWU moved in front 1-0 following a turnover by Evergreen near the top of the Geoducks' 18-yard defensive box. Mauro Garrote scored the goal for the Wolves at 52:20 on a 15-yard shot after receiving a short pass from Paulo Tostado.

Neither team scored the rest of the way. Perhaps the best chance for Evergreen to tie the game was at 60:24 when a shot by Connor Scanlon (So., F) was tipped away from the crossbar by Walla Walla goalie Pablo Ossorio.

Ossorio registered two saves overall while earning the shutout win. Tom Cole (Jr., GK) of the Geoducks was credited with eight saves during the game and one shot by cleared away from the line by an Evergreen defender.

Walla Walla gained a 28-3 lead in total shots and held a 10-2 margin in shots on goal. The Wolves finished with a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks. Garrote topped all players with eight total shots for WWU, while Tostado provided the Wolves with six total shots.

Evergreen will remain at home to take on Warner Pacific University on Sunday, Oct. 19. Game time at Geoduck Pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. PDT.
