LACEY, Wash. -- Saint Martin's University defeated The Evergreen State College 107-53 on Saturday, Nov. 22 in an exhibition men's basketball game for the Geoducks. It was Evergreen's third exhibition game in four days. The game counted for Saint Martin's, which improved to 3-1 on the season. The Geoducks remained 0-2.
Kohrey Bridges (Sr., F) and
Bradley Graham (Sr., G) led Evergreen with nine points each. Graham also contributed eight assists, three rebounds, two 3-point baskets, and a steal.
Tony Frohlich-Fair (Sr., W) and
Jordan Smalls (Jr., G) both added eight points for the Geoducks. Frohlich-Fair grabbed a team-high six rebounds.
Jayson Mathews (Jr., G) provided three assists.
For SMU, Diego Trejo-Delgado led the way with 18 points and nine boards. Kaden Hansen earned 15 points, while Nari Jordan tacked on 11 points and five boards. Anthony Simo topped the Saints with eight rebounds. Mark Clegg Jr. earned 10 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and a steal. Dae'Kwon Watson supplied 10 points and three steals. The Saints hit 41 of 80 field goals (51.3%) and made 10 of 34 three-point shots (29.4%).
Baskets by Bridges and Graham gave Evergreen a 4-2 lead. The teams were tied at 6-6 after Bridges scored on a jump shot with 18:08 on the clock. Saint Martin's earned the next eight points on two baskets each by Trejo-Delgado and Clegg Jr. for a 14-8 advantage at the 15:50 mark.
SMU took an 18-8 lead, but the Geoducks moved within 19-12 on a traditional three-point play by Frohlich-Fair with 13:21 left in the half. The Saints answered with a 6-0 run, but Evergreen countered with a 7-0 run of its own to cut the lead to 25-19 on a 3-pointer by
Zach Jefferson (Sr., G) as the clock reached 9:41. Saint Martin's added the next 10 points for a 35-19 advantage and pulled away later in the half for a 59-27 lead at the intermission.
The Saints continued to build their lead in the second half. Even so, the Geoducks put together a strong stretch of action with a 10-0 run between the 14:21 mark and 9:26 remaining, as Evergreen went nearly five minutes without allowing Saint Martin's to score. The run started with four points by
Kenzel Massey (So., G) and also included a 3-pointer by
Tyler No (Jr., G) and three points from Jefferson.
Evergreen shot 31.3% for the game (20 of 64). The Geoducks connected on 6 of 34 three-pointers (17.6%) and sank 7 of 14 free throws (50.0%). Saint Martin's was 15 of 24 (62.5%) at the line. The Saints achieved a 57-36 rebounding edge.
The Geoducks will return to action on Tuesday, Dec. 2 in an exhibition game against Pacific Lutheran University at the Costantino Recreation Center on the Evergreen campus. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. PST.
