Geoducks Fall to Oregon Tech in CCC Opener

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. -- Tony Frohlich-Fair (Sr., W) earned 18 points for the Geoducks, but The Evergreen State College fell to Oregon Tech 89-53 in the Cascade Collegiate Conference opener for both teams on Friday, Dec. 5. Dakota Reber led the Owls with 23 points.

Oregon Tech, ranked #22 in the NAIA Men's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 Poll, advanced its record to 6-3, including 1-0 in the CCC. Evergreen dropped to 0-3 overall, 0-1 in the CCC.

Frohlich-Fair's 18 points topped Evergreen's scoring chart. He was 7 for 17 from the field, including 2 for 5 from 3-point range. Bradley Graham (Sr., G) tacked on 10 points and matched Frohlich-Fair with a 2-for-3 performance on 3-pointers. Tyler No (Jr., G) scored eight points and grabbed three boards. Graham and Jayson Mathews (Jr., G) tied for the team lead with four rebounds. 

On his way to 23 points, Reber connected on 8 of 11 field goals and 7 of 9 free throws for the Owls. Reber also earned 11 rebounds, three assists, and one steal. Jared Sucher was next in scoring for the Owls with 19 points. He was 8 of 15 on field goals, including 3 for 6 on 3-pointers. Jackson Cooper added 17 points and tied Reber with 11 rebounds. Cooper, who finished 7 for 11 from the field, also registered a game-high nine assists.

The Geoducks took a 3-0 lead in the first minute on a layup by Zach Jefferson (Sr., G) and a free throw by Frohlich-Fair. A bit later, Evergreen owned a 5-4 lead following a layup by Graham with 17:45 on the clock. Oregon Tech countered with a 13-2 run for a 17-7 lead after Reber put through a layup with 12:13 left in the half. 

Evergreen was within single digits 24-16 after Graham made a layup with 6:09 remaining. The Owls' lead was 30-20 following a jumper from Graham at the 4:45 mark. Oregon Tech went on a 13-4 run to end the half, starting with two layups by Owen Nathan.

The Owls opened the second half with a 12-2 run for a 54-26 advantage. The offensive surge started with a 3-pointer by Sucher and ended with a 3-pointer from Sucher. 

Evergreen battled back with a 20-6 run that reduced the margin to 60-46 on a 3-point basket by Kenzel Massey (So., G) as the clock reached 10:17. Oregon Tech tallied seven of the next eight points. Reber completed the run with a basket at the 8:01 mark.

The Geoducks made 20 of 70 field goal attempts (28.6%) and went 6 for 30 (20.0%) on 3-pointers. Oregon Tech shot 53.7% for the game (39 of 67). The Owls hit 5 of 18 three-pointers (27.8%). Oregon Tech was 12 for 16 at the line, while Evergreen went 7 for 12 on free throws.

Up next for Evergreen is a CCC match-up at Southern Oregon University on Saturday, Dec. 6. Tipoff is slated for 5 p.m. PST.
