Southern Oregon Defeats Evergreen in CCC Women's Basketball

ASHLAND, Ore. -- Southern Oregon University surged out to a 19-5 lead in the first quarter and went on to outscore The Evergreen State College 72-47 in a Cascade Collegiate Conference women's basketball game on Saturday, Dec. 6 at Lithia Motors Pavilion. Jenika Zurita of SOU scored 16 points for the Raiders, while Jenna Glenzel (Sr., G) earned 15 points for the Geoducks.

SOU, which received votes but was not in the Top 25 of the most recent NAIA Women's Basketball Coaches Poll, upped its record to 7-3, including 2-0 in the CCC. Evergreen slipped to 0-3 overall, 0-2 in the CCC.

Glenzel was 6 of 12 on field goals and hit 3 of 4 three-point shots. Glenzel tied for the team lead with seven rebounds and led the Geoducks with four steals. Jesselle Victo Castillo (Jr., PG) provided Evergreen with nine points while connecting on 4 of 8 shots, including one 3-pointer. Bayleigh Harder (Sr., F/C) contributed seven points, seven boards, two assists, two steals, and two blocked shots. Amaya Afatasi (Jr., PG) and Amaialyne Cepeda (Sr., G) each supplied three assists.

Zurita was successful for SOU on 6 of 8 field goal attempts, while converting 4 of 5 shots from 3-point range. Lydia Traore tacked on 10 points and topped the Raiders with seven rebounds and three steals. Eliza Digiulio and Taylee Clements both achieved nine points. Clements was 3 for 6 on 3-pointers. Traore and DiGiulio each blocked two shots.

The Raiders took a 7-0 lead paced by a 3-pointer from Digiulio, a layup by Gracie Arnold, and a layup by DiGiulio with 6:28 left in the first quarter. Evergreen scored next on a 3-pointer by Harder, but SOU expanded its lead to 16-3 before Victo Castillo added a jumper for the Geoducks with 32 seconds on the clock. Clements hit a 3-pointer for Southern Oregon with one second left.

SOU's lead didn't change much for more than six minutes into the second quarter. The Raiders owned a slim 7-6 scoring edge in the quarter following a jumper by Harder of Evergreen at the 3:37 mark. SOU put in the next seven points, ending with a pair of free throws by DiGiulio with 2:11 remaining in the half, for a 33-11 advantage. Evergreen trailed 35-15 at the intermission.

At the start of the third quarter, the Raiders went on a 6-0 run to increase their lead to 41-15. Arnold earned four points during the run. The Raiders outscored the Geoducks 26-15 during the quarter.

The Geoducks achieved an overall 17-11 scoring edge in the fourth quarter, as Glenzel provided eight points. At the end of the quarter, Evergreen recorded the last five points on a 3-pointer from Glenzel and a jumper by Victo Castillo.

Evergreen shot 33.9% on field goals (19 of 56) and hit 7 of 16 three-pointers (43.8%). The Geoducks were 2 for 2 at the free throw line. Southern Oregon finished 28 of 74 (37.8%) from the field, while connecting on 11 of 25 three-point shots (44.0%). The Raiders went 5 for 6 on free throws and claimed a 49-33 rebounding margin.

The Geoducks will host University of Puget Sound in a non-conference game at the Costantino Recreation Center on Wednesday, Dec. 10. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. PST.
