Bushnell Defeats Evergreen in Men's Basketball

OLYMPIA, Wash. -- Bushnell University held a 35-29 advantage over The Evergreen State College at halftime and extended the lead in the second half, as the Beacons downed the Geoducks 90-65 in a Cascade Collegiate Conference men's basketball game on Saturday, Feb. 15 at the Costantino Recreation Center. Jourdan Joseph (Sr., G) of Evergreen led all scorers with 19 points.

Joseph was 7 of 13 on field goals, including 2 of 4 on 3-point shots. He also earned six rebounds. Solomon Campbell (Jr., F) provided Evergreen with 10 points, nine rebounds, and two blocked shots. Zach Jefferson (Jr., G) tallied nine points and supplied three assists, while Garrett Long (Jr., G/W) scored eight points. Tyler No (So., G) contributed seven points and was 5 for 6 at the free throw line.

Burnett hit 10 of 10 free throws on his way to scoring 18 points for the Beacons. He hauled down seven rebounds, supplied four assists, and recorded two steals. Squeeky Johnson added 15 points and three assists. Turner Livingston registered 13 points, while Cory Johnson amassed 11 points and seven boards. Ashton Harvey finished with 10 points.

The Beacons upped their record to 11-14 on the season, 7-12 in the CCC. Evergreen fell to 2-20 overall, 2-17 in the CCC.

Joseph scored first on a 3-pointer just 20 seconds into the game, but Bushnell was in front 11-5 after Squeeky Johnson made a 3-pointer with 16:22 to go in the half. Evergreen pulled within 17-16 on a layup from Jefferson with 8:13 remaining in the half. The Geoducks also trailed by a single point at 19-18 following two free throws by Long at the 6:34 mark.

A bit later, Bushnell owned a 26-22 lead before the Beacons went on an 8-1 run to surge out to a 34-23 advantage. The run opened with one 3-pointer each by Isaiah Wallace and Squeeky Johnson. Evergreen closed the gap to 35-29 at halftime after Jemoi Davis (Jr., W) scored on a layup with 1:28 left and Joseph added a layup with 28 seconds to play.

Bushnell scored 16 of the first 22 points in the second half to expand the lead to 51-35 with 14:41 remaining. Corey Johnson registered seven points during the run. Joseph hit three free throws after being fouled on a 3-point shot to reduce the margin to 51-38. Evergreen moved within 53-41 when Davis sank two free throws with 12:11 remaining.

The Beacons tacked on a 12-4 run for a 65-45 lead with 9:43 on the clock. Joseph scored next on a 3-point shot, but the Geoducks couldn't get closer.

Evergreen shot 41.8% for the game (23 of 55) and hit 3 of 9 three-pointers. Bushnell was 34 of 72 from the field (47.2%) and sank 7 of 26 three-point attempts (26.9%). At the free throw line, Evergreen was 16 for 21 (76.2%) and BU was 15 for 16 (93.8%). The Beacons claimed a 39-33 rebounding margin.

The Geoducks will take on Corban University in the Senior Night game at the Costantino Recreation Center on Sunday, Feb. 16. Game time is scheduled for 5 p.m. PST, but the Evergreen seniors will be honored before warmups begin after the women's game.
