CALDWELL, Idaho -- The Evergreen State College was led by
Jalyn Sackrider (Sr., F/C) with 18 points, but College of Idaho defeated the Geoducks 79-56 in a Cascade Collegiate Conference women's basketball game on Friday, Feb. 21. The Yotes held a slim 16-14 lead after the first quarter and led 42-28 at halftime.
Sackrider connected on 7 of 11 field goals and was 4 for 4 at the free throw line. She provided Evergreen with four rebounds, three assists, and two blocked shots.
Mikail Montez (Sr., F/C) and
Allison DeBerry (Sr., G) each added eight points for the Geoducks. Montez led Evergreen with seven rebounds, while earning one assist, one blocked shot, and one steal. DeBerry hit two 3-pointers.
Jenna Glenzel (Sr., G/F) was 4 of 4 at the free throw line, helping the Geoducks finish 15 of 16 overall (93.8%) at the line.Â
The Yotes were topped by Brooke Beresford with 16 points, as she sank 7 of 9 field goals, including 2 of 3 from 3-point range. She also earned four assists and blocked a shot. Mia Austin scored 13 points and was 4 for 8 on 3-point attempts. Anna Mooney chipped in 12 points for C of I, while adding six assists and three boards. Taryn Riley scored nine points, while Ashton Adamson supplied seven points and a team-high six assists.Â
College of Idaho was 33 of 60 on field goals (55.0%), including 12 for 26 on 3-pointers (46.2%). The Yotes made 1 of 3 free throws. Evergreen shot 38.0% for the game (19 of 50) and sank 3 of 13 shots from behind the 3-point line. The Yotes finished with a slim 31-30 rebounding edge.
The Yotes upped their record to 15-11 overall, 13-8 in the CCC. The Geoducks fell to 8-15 on the season, 8-13 in the CCC.
In the first quarter, C of I took a 9-4 led on a layup by Riley with 6:59 left. The Yotes soon held a 12-6 margin when Kylie Waltermeyer put through a 3-pointer with 5:44 on the clock. Evergreen went on a 6-0 run to tie the game. Montez completed the run with a layup at the 3:12 mark. The teams were tied again at 14-14 after Glenzel hit two free throws with 1:44 to play. Beresford made a layup with 0:29 remaining to put the Yotes back in front.
Sackrider tied the game with the first basket of the second quarter. On College of Idaho's next possession, Riley connected on a 3-pointer with 8:24 to play in the half, starting a 12-4 run by the Yotes for a 28-20 lead. Evergreen pulled within five points twice on 3-pointers by
Thuyvi Tran (Sr., G) and DeBerry, but C of I ended the second quarter with an 11-2 run.
The Geoducks tallied the first seven points of the third quarter to cut the margin to 42-35 as the clock reached 8:49, but couldn't get closer. Evergreen's run included layups by Sackrider and Montez, plus a 3-pointer by DeBerry. TESC outscored C of I by a 17-16 margin in the third quarter. The Yotes led 58-45 heading into the final 10 minutes.
College of Idaho went on an 8-0 run to grab a 66-45 advantage with 7:29 to go. C of I achieved a 21-11 scoring edge in the fourth quarter.
Evergreen will take on Eastern Oregon University in La Grande, Oregon, on Saturday, Feb. 22. Game time for the CCC matchup is set for 3 p.m. PST.
