LA GRANDE, Ore. -- The Evergreen State College men's basketball team hit 10 three-point shots, but Eastern Oregon University outscored the Geoducks 96-85 in a Cascade Collegiate Conference game on Saturday, Feb. 22. The Mountaineers made just four three-pointers in the win despite shooting 51.4% (36 of 70) overall.
The Geoducks also shot well from the field, connecting on 29 of 62 field goals for 46.8%. Evergreen was 10 for 19 (52.6%) from behind the 3-point line. On free throws, Evergreen was 17 for 17 and EOU went 20 for 24 (83.3%).
Eastern Oregon improved to 18-10 overall, 13-9 in the CCC. The Geoducks concluded the season at 2-23, including 2-20 in the CCC.
Evergreen's top scorer was
Bradley Graham (Jr., G) with 21 points, as he connected on 7 of 11 field goals and 4 of 5 three-point shots.
Jourdan Joseph (Sr., G) registered 17 points while going 10 for 10 at the free throw line. Joseph also contributed five assists.
Solomon Campbell (Jr., F) scored 14 points and grabbed eight boards. He was 7 for 10 on field goals.
Also for the Geoducks,
Garret Long (Jr., G/W) tallied 13 points and earned three assists.
Nathan Behr (Jr., F/W) scored eight points and
Nick Gutierrez (Sr., G) added seven points.
Garrett Hawkes and Brennen Newsom both scored 25 points for Eastern Oregon. Hawkes was credited with five rebounds, four assists, a block shot, and three steals. Newsom hauled down six rebounds, made 9 of 11 field goals, and finished 7 for 10 on free throws. TJ Doman put in 19 points and led the Mountaineers with 10 rebounds. Doman also claimed four assists, three blocked shots, and three steals.
Evergreen trailed 57-44 after a fast-paced first half. Hawkes and Newsom each had 13 points at halftime for EOU. Solomon owned 12 points and Long had 11 for the Geoducks at the break.
A traditional three-point play by Joseph pulled Evergreen within 58-49 early in the second half. Later, the Mountaineers held a 70-53 lead following a layup by Doman with 15:02 remaining. Evergreen responded with a 20-5 surge. During the run, back-to-back 3-pointers by Graham reduced the margin to 75-68. The Geoducks added a fastbreak layup by Behr and a 3-pointer by
Zach Jefferson (Jr., G) to pull within 75-73 at the 9:17 mark.
The Mountaineers tallied the next eight points to take an 83-73 lead with 7:47 to play. The run included a 3-pointer by Bodily, a layup and foul shot by Doman, and a layup by Bodily. Evergreen earned the next two points, but EOU followed with a 9-4 run to increase the margin to 92-77 with 3:03 on the clock.
During the first half, the teams battled on offense until Eastern Oregon gained some breathing room late in the period. Evergreen led 29-27 after a 3-pointer by Graham with 9:19 left, and the Geoducks owned a 34-33 advantage following a jumper by Behr with 6:24 to go. EOU ended the half with a 24-10 run.
