PORTLAND, Ore. --
Allison DeBerry (Sr., G) sank a 3-point shot with 0.3 seconds left to send The Evergreen State College past Multnomah 64-63 in a Cascade Collegiate women's basketball game on Friday, Feb. 7. Syndey VanNess (Sr., G/F) earned an assist on the game-winning play.
The win advanced Evergreen's record to 5-14 overall, 5-12 in the CCC. Multnomah dropped to 6-17 overall, 4-13 in the CCC.
Multnomah took a 63-61 lead when Jersey Huerta made two free throws with 3.8 seconds on the clock.Â
The Geoducks called timeout after the second free throw, and Evergreen advanced the ball. Multnomah also called a timeout. When play resumed, the ball was passed to VanNess, who found DeBerry for the game-winning 3-pointer.
DeBerry scored seven points for the Geoducks. She also earned three rebounds and provided two assists.
Mikail Montez (Sr., F/C) topped the Geoducks with 20 points while hitting 9 of 14 field goals. Montez also registered nine rebounds and three assists.
VanNess finished the game with 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting. She led the Geoducks with seven assists and grabbed three boards.
Jalyn Sackrider (Sr., F/C) earned 10 points and eight rebounds.
Kadance Blankers (Jr., G) scored eight points.
For Multnomah, Gracie Browning and Ellie Robertson shared the scoring lead with 16 points each. Browning was 8 of 14 from the field, while Robertson hit 8 of 12 shots. Makayla Torkornoo tacked on 16 points and made 5 of 9 field goals, including 4 of 7 shots from 3-point range.Â
Browning earned 10 rebounds and five assists. Huerta contributed six rebounds and seven assists.
The Lions shot out to a 9-2 lead, but Evergreen pulled within 9-8 on a 3-pointer by Blankers with 2:48 on the clock. Multnomah ended the quarter with a 9-0 run for an 18-8 advantage.
Multnomah increased its lead to 25-10 on a 3-pointer by Torkornoo with 8:05 remaining in the half. The Geoducks cut the margin to 25-20 with a 10-0 run ending with a layup by DeBerry at the 4:31 mark. The Lions responded with a 6-0 run and held a 31-24 lead at halftime.
A traditional three-point play by Montez moved the Geoducks within 34-33 with 7:03 left in the third quarter. A bit later, Evergreen took a 37-36 lead on a jumper by VanNess with 5:52 to go. The basket by VanNess was part of a 7-0 surge that gave TESC a 40-36 advantage. Multnomah cut the margin to a single point at 43-42 on a layup by Robertson. Evergreen outscored the Lions 24-13 during the third period for a 48-44 lead.
The fourth quarter featured four ties and six lead changes. With 1:55 left, an old-fashioned 3-pointer by Leia Naeata gave Multnomah a 61-59 lead. Evergreen tied the game at 61-61 when
Thuyvi Tran (Sr., G) hit a jump shot with 27 seconds on the clock, setting up the exciting finish.
For the game, Evergreen shot 48.3% from the field (28 of 58). Multnomah was 25 of 55 on field goals (45.5%). The Geoducks outrebounded the Lions 35-28. Evergreen forced Multnomah into 15 turnovers, while the Geoducks lost the ball 14 times.
Evergreen will play at Warner Pacific University on Saturday, Feb. 8. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m. PST.
