KIRKLAND, Wash. -- The Evergreen State College rallied from a 29-point halftime deficit at Northwest University on Tuesday, Jan. 6 to get as close as 12 points on three occasions in the second half before the Eagles defeated the Geoducks, 101-88, in Cascade Collegiate Conference action. Evergreen outscored NU 61-45 in the second half.
Northwest University advanced its record to 4-11 on the season, while Evergreen ended the game at 1-8 overall. Both teams moved to 1-6 in the CCC.
Northwest University led 56-27 at halftime and held an 80-49 lead with 14:37 remaining. Evergreen countered with a 19-0 run, including five 3-point baskets, to pull within 80-68 on a layup by
Tony Frohlich-Fair (Sr., W) with 6:32 left. The big run by the Geoducks featured two 3-pointers each by
Zach Jefferson (Sr., G) and
Jacob Laff (Jr., W), plus one 3-pointer by Frohlich-Fair.
Evergreen also trailed by 12 points two more times, including 84-72 following a layup by
Tyler No (Jr., G) with 4:52 on the clock. NU tallied the next eight points, starting with 3-pointers by Cameron Downey and Logan Stempniak, to regain control with a 92-72 lead at the 3:11 mark.
Frohlich-Fair led the Geoducks with 23 points during the game. He was 9 for 16 on field goals and hit 3 of 6 three-point shots. He also earned five rebounds, four assists, and one steal. Frohlich-Fair has scored in double figures in all nine games for Evergreen and has registered 23 or more points five times.
No and Laff each provided 14 points for the Geoducks. Laff was 4 for 8 on 3-point shots and was credited with three rebounds. No also grabbed three rebounds. Jefferson finished with 10 points to go with three rebounds and two steals.
Gabriel Wigginton (Jr., W) supplied nine points, four assists, two boards, and two steals.
The Eagles received 22 points from Trent Williams, who went 6 for 8 on field goals. He was 5 for 6 from 3-point range and went 5 for 6 at the free throw line. Williams also contributed a game-high 13 rebounds to go with five assists, one blocked shot, and one steal. Stempniak tacked on 21 points. He was 8 for 13 from the field, including 4 for 7 on 3-pointers, while accumulating five rebounds, six assists, and two blocks.
Andrew Iyamah scored 17 points for NU to go with seven rebounds and three assists. Rashid Potter earned 11 points, hit three 3-pointers, and hauled down three boards. Christian Watkins matched Stempniak with six assists.
In the first half, Northwest University led 14-4 on a 3-pointer by Williams with 16:19 left. Two 3-pointers by
Bradley Graham (Sr., G) of Evergreen reduced the margin to 14-10 with 15:53 remaining. The Eagles answered with an 18-0 run that included four 3-point baskets. Frohlich-Fair broek the streak with a layup for the Geoducks, but Evergreen trailed 32-12 at the 10:46 mark.
Evergreen shot 45.1% for the game (32 of 71), including 22 for 38 (57.9%) in the second half. The Geoducks connected on 13 of 30 three-pointers (43.3%), including 9 for 16 (56.3%) in the second half. Evergreen was 11 for 13 (84.6%) on free throws. NU hit 37 of 64 field goals (57.8%) and made 18 of 34 three-point shots (42.9%). The Eagles were 12 of 18 (66.7%) on three-pointers in the first 20 minutes. NU converted 9 of 15 free throws.
The Geoducks will take on Warner Pacific University on Saturday, Jan. 10 at the Costantino Recreation Center. Game time for the CCC match-up is set for 5 p.m. PST.
