KIRKLAND, Wash. -- The Evergreen State College women's basketball team fell behind Northwest University by 26 points in the first quarter, but were outscored by just five points the rest of the way, in a 98-67 loss to the Eagles during a Cascade Collegiate Conference game on Tuesday, Jan. 6.
Amaya Afatasi (Jr., PG) led the Geoducks with 20 points, while Ellie Bost topped NU with 21 points.
Northwest University built a 35-9 advantage in the first 10 minutes. The Eagles gained a much slimmer 63-58 edge over the final 30 minutes. Evergreen outscored the Eagles 20-16 in the second quarter.
The Eagles improved to 6-10 on the season, 2-6 in the CCC. Evergreen fell to 0-10 overall, 0-7 in the CCC.
Afatasi set a season high by earning 20 points and shot 7 of 12 from the field, including a trio of 3-pointers. Afatasi was 3 of 4 at the free throw line and also recorded two steals.
Jenna Glenzel (Sr., G) provided Evergreen with 17 points and was 7 of 11 on field goals, including 3 of 4 on 3-point attempts. Glenzel also recorded four steals.
Sahara Soufi (Jr., G) and
Jesselle Victo Castillo (Jr. PG) each finished with seven points for the Geoducks. Afatasi, Glenzel, Soufi, and Castillo each grabbed three rebounds. Castillo was credited with two assists, while
Bayleigh Harder (Sr., F/C) scored six points and blocked two shots.
Bost's 21 points paced four players in double figures for the Eagles. She was 7 for 11 on field goals, hit two 3-pointers, and went 5 for 5 on free throws.
Kaleah Medeiros chipped in 19 points and was 8 of 12 from the field, including three 3-point baskets. Medeiros contributed five assists and three rebounds. Ella Whitakeer and Hailey Monte both achieved 13 points and three assists. Whitaker also supplied five rebounds and four steals. Ellie DeWaard led all players with nine boards.
The Eagles zoomed out to a 13-0 lead following a 3-pointer by Medeiros with 6:16 left in the first quarter. Harder responded 30 seconds later with a 3-pointer for the Geoducks to cut the margin to 13-3. The Eagles ended the quarter with a 22-6 run for a 35-9 lead.
Evergreen gained a 20-16 scoring advantage in the second quarter. The Geoducks trailed 49-29 with 48 seconds to play in the half after Glenzel hit a layup. Monte tacked on a layup for NU with 20 seconds on the clock to grab a 51-29 halftime lead.
In the third quarter, Northwest University earned a 23-19 scoring advantage. Medeiros tallied 12 points for the Eagles during the quarter, while Afatasi produced nine points for the Geoducks. In the fourth quarter, NU claimed a 24-19 edge on the scoreboard, with Whitaker supplying nine points for the Eagles. Glenzel accumulated eight points in the fourth quarter and Afatasi added five points for Evergreen.
Evergreen made 24 of 63 field goals (38.1%) during the game, sank 11 of 14 free throws, and went 8 for 21 on 3-pointers (38.1%). The Geoducks connected on 7 of 14 three-pointers in the final three quarters. NU was 38 of 67 on field goals (56.7%), including 13 of 26 on 3-pointers (50.0%). The Eagles hit 9 of 10 free throws.
After playing three games in a row on the road, the Geoducks will host Warner Pacific University on Saturday, Jan. 10. Game time at the Costantino Recreation Center is set for 3 p.m. PST.
