OLYMPIA, Wash. -- The Evergreen State College men's soccer team lost to University of the Fraser Valley (Canada) 2-0 in an exhibition game at Geoduck Pitch on Tuesday, Aug. 18. Evergreen and Fraser Valley have not yet started their regular season schedules.
Both goals were scored by Mateo Brazinha of Fraser Valley. The opening goal was tallied at 17:05 after a long pass by the Cascades was misplayed by the Geoducks near the top of the 18-yard box. Brazinha controlled the loose ball and shot from 21 yards into the lower right corner of an empty net.
Brazinha increased the Cascades' advantage to 2-0 late in the half when he struck the ball from 18 yards and placed it in the lower right corner of the goal. He was assisted on the play by Kai Xu.Â
Neither team scored in the second half. Fraser Valley finished with a 20-9 advantage in total shots, as the Cascades took 10 shots in each half. UFV earned a 10-3 edge in shots on target.
Evergreen goalies
Gabriel Wilhelm (Jr.) and
Tom Cole (Sr.) each played 45 minutes in the nets. Wilhelm recorded three saves in the first half, and Cole was credited with seven saves in the second half. Wilhelm contributed as an attacking player in the second half.
Brazinha led all players with four total shots. Evergreen's top offensive threats were
Luca Viana (Jr., F) and
Neremia Byaruhanga (Jr., F), each with three total shots, as well as
Kolby Juarez (Sr., M) with two total shots.
The Geoducks claimed a 4-2 edge in corner kicks in the first half, but UFV achieved a 7-0 margin in corner kicks over the final 45 minutes.Â
Evergreen will be back in action with a scrimmage game against Peninsula College on Thursday, Aug. 20. Game time at Geoduck Pitch is set for 5 p.m. PDT.
