Evergreen's Season Ends in Penalty Kicks

Jordan Zimmerman rises high to head the ball away.
Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – The Evergreen State College saw its record-setting season come to an agonizing end on Thursday evening as Rocky Mountain pulled out a 1-1 (4-3) penalty-kick victory in the semifinal round of the Cascade Collegiate Conference Men's Soccer Championships at Willamalane Sports Complex.

The 2015 Geoducks (13-3-2) set a new single-season winning percentage record for Evergreen men's soccer at .778, and while this result technically goes down as a tie, it doesn't take away the sting of seeing the season end against the NAIA's No. 15-ranked team.

"It's hard to see the guys go out and any ending was going to be bittersweet, right," Evergreen head coach John Purtteman said. "It was a great year and individual performances were fantastic. It was a good team against a good team. That's the way the game is. It was tough, but what a great group of guys."

The Geoducks, the tournament's No. 4 seed, had played 110 minutes of goalless soccer against the Bears, the regular season CCC champion and No. 1 seed, on Oct. 24 in Olympia. And through the first half and into the first 25 minutes of the second half there remained no scoring between these two evenly matched sides.

Evergreen did, however, put early pressure on the Rocky Mountain defense, dominating the first 10 minutes with four shots. Rocky's first attempt didn't come until 11:04 into the game.

About halfway through the opening period the Geoducks had a flurry of shots that forced Bears goalkeeper Catlin into three saves. Two came back-to-back on shots by Juan Oropeza and Tanner Williams, the first when he dove to his left and the latter a point-blank blast that he smothered with his body.

Rocky finally broke the goal drought at 71:50 when a collision between Evergreen defender Jordan Zimmerman, goalkeeper Angel Guerra and Rocky's Donovan Luce at the top of the penalty area left Zimmerman and Guerra on the turf. Luce, still standing, hit the ball into the open net.

Evergreen got the goal back about 2 ½ minutes later when Crisantos Chavez struck a looping cross near the goal and Catlin, who was strong between the pipes for the Bears in the first half, bobbled the ball into the net. Chavez got credit for the goal, his second of the season, and the score was 1-1.

It remained that way through the remainder of regular time and through a pair of 10-minute overtime periods, with Guerra coming up with two spectacular saves in the second overtime to keep the score at 1-1.

That set up the penalty kick shootout. Tanner Williams, Issa Hassan and Jake Zimmerman all converted for Evergreen and Guerra made a one-handed save to help send the shootout to a sixth round with both teams at three successful penalty kicks. After an Evergreen miss, Rocky Mountain defender Colin Gregory scored the winner, sending the Bears to Saturday's final and ending Evergreen's season.

Rocky ended up with a 20-14 advantage in total shots and put 11 of their efforts on target compared to five for the Geoducks. Guerra was big in goal with 10 saves compared to four for Catlin. Corner kicks favored Rocky, 7-4.
