Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Fuller Finds Net, Geoducks Scuttle Keelhaulers

Elijah Fuller sank a fall-away 18-footer from the right corner with 2.2 seconds remaining Friday night as the Evergreen Geoducks scuttled the Cal-Maritime Keelhaulers, 86-85, in a non-conference men's basketball game played inside Costantino Recreation Center.

The Geoducks (1-2) led by as many as 16 points in the first half but had to rally from an 80-75 deficit with a little over three minutes to play to pick up their first victory of the season.

The lead changed hands three times in the final 22 seconds, Evergreen taking an 84-83 advantage on a Malik Redmond runner with 22 seconds to play before the Keelhaulers went back on top on a pretty reverse layin by Zavier Lucero with 10 seconds to play. That set the stage for Fuller, who took a pass from Redmond before stepping away from his defender and draining the game winner. Cal-Maritime (4-4) could get no better than a hopeful heave from near the midcourt line, and the Geoducks had the win in their home opener.

"How about that for a home opener," Evergreen head coach Tim Malroy said. "We got to experience what it is to play well for an extended period of time, and then they make their run. We needed to figure out where the grit came from, and we got it, we had it. We made buckets when we needed to and executed really well on that last play. Now we just need to roll and do it again."

After struggling in two road losses to open the season last weekend, the Geoducks came out with cannons blazing in this game. They went on a 16-2 run to turn an early 6-5 deficit into a 21-8 lead. Brandon Kohler started the run with five straight points, including a three-pointer, and Lukas Kelly and Dalton Groenewold ended it with consecutive three-point baskets.

After Cal-Maritime came back to make it a 22-16 game, Evergreen scored 10 unanswered points to take its largest lead of the game at 32-16 with 7:41 left in the opening period. Jared Roffler had a follow dunk and Fuller capped the surge with a three ball for the Geoducks.

The visitors managed to pull within 43-39 at the half, and except for a seven-point Evergreen lead two minutes in, neither team led by more than five points over the remainder of the game.

Evergreen shot 48 percent from the field (35--for-73) and 50 percent from three-point range (10-for-20), including 4-for-5 by Fuller. The hosts also enjoyed a significant 44-29 advantage in rebounding, led by Roffler with nine and Fuller with eight.

Fuller led both teams with 22 points, and joining him in double figures for the Geoducks were Ryan Quigley with 17, Redmond with 11 and Roffler with 10, while Raven Frazier led both teams with six assists.

Cal-Maritime shot 50 percent overall (30-for-60), 46 percent from long range (12-for-26) and 87 percent from the foul line (13-for-15). Ben Borja scored 17 points and Josh Hauser added 16 points and a team-high six rebounds for the Keelhaulers.

The Geoducks are back in action again tomorrow, hosting the Portland Bible Wildcats at 7 p.m. inside the CRC.
