Merrily Jones and
Deidra Miller both recorded double-doubles to lead Evergreen to its first women's basketball win of the season, a 77-64 non-conference decision over the Walla Walla University Wolves on Saturday night at Windemuth Court.
Jones, a junior center, tallied 22 points and 13 rebounds while Miller, a senior forward, added 17 points and 12 rebounds. With junior forward
Anna Cook adding 13 points, the Geoducks (1-22 overall) picked up 52 of their points from the front court starters. Senior guard
Alexcis Higginbotham added 13 points and nine rebounds and Cook grabbed seven boards as the Geoducks enjoyed a 59-38 dominance that category, .
Cook hit a three-pointer 19 seconds into the game to start the scoring, and except for a 5-5 tie, the Geoducks held the lead throughout. They took their largest lead at 39-18 on a Cook layin with 2:27 left in the second quarter.
Jones shot 8-for-16 overall and 3-for-4 from three-point range in piling up her 22 points. Evergreen shot 38.5 percent overall (25-for-65) and 30.4 percent from three-point range (7-for-23).
Walla Walla's leading scorer was Carolina Montes with 20 points, while Titi Graham led all players with 14 rebounds. The Wolves shot 28.8 percent from the field (19-for-66) and 32.0 percent from distance (8-for-25).
The teams conclude their seasons tomorrow at 1 p.m. The two games had been scheduled for Feb. 9 and 10 but were postponed by inclement weather and poor travel conditions.
