Geoducks Down Walla Walla in Five Sets, Avenge Earlier Loss

WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Sophia Scroggins (So., OPP/MB) earned 14 kills and nine block assists, while Lucendy Perez (Sr., OH) provided 11 kills and 24 digs, as The Evergreen State College defeated Walla Walla University 3-2 in a Cascade Collegiate Conference volleyball match on Saturday, Oct. 12. The win avenged a 3-0 loss to the Wolves in Olympia, Washington, on Sept. 6.

In the rematch, the Geoducks prevailed, 25-22, 19-25, 25-20, 22-25, 15-11. The action took place at Walla Walla Community College due to a conflict on the Walla Walla University campus.

The win improved Evergreen's record to 4-13 on the season with a 4-9 mark in the CCC. Walla Walla ended the match at 7-8 for the year, 6-7 in the CCC.

Scroggins and Perez were joined by several other Geoducks in leading Evergreen to the win. Marin Collins (Jr., MB) contributed two block solos, matched Scroggins with nine block assists, and pounded seven kills. Molly Packer (Jr., L) totaled 23 digs, while Joy Miyazawa (Fr., S/DS) added 17 digs.

The Wolves used a 7-3 run during the second set to take a 14-8 lead. Evergreen cut the margin to 17-16 a bit later, on a kill by Dilworth. The Wolves held a slim 20-18 edge before closing the set with a 5-1 run.

A 25-20 win by the Geoducks in the third set gave Evergreen a 2-1 lead. The Geoducks trailed 7-3, but eventually claimed a 12-11 lead on a service ace by Perez. Evergreen maintained the lead and ended the set on a 5-2 run, including a set-clinching kill by Walker Campbell.

Walla Walla put together a 4-0 run to equalize, including one rally kept alive with a foot save for a dig. The Geoducks moved in front 11-10 on a kill by Perez to start a 5-1 run to win the match.
