GREAT FALLS, Mont. --
Alejandro Gallegos (Jr, D) scored a goal for The Evergreen State College in the final minute, but the Geoducks fell to the University of Providence 2-1 on Friday, Oct. 25. The Argos competed with 10 players for nearly 71 minutes after Ole Heinsohn received a red card in the first half.
Providence took a 2-0 lead in the first half and focused on strong defending in the second half, especially in the final third of the field. The Geoducks outshot the Argos 10-7 for the game, including 7-4 in the the first 45 minutes. Evergreen claimed eight corner kicks in the first half and finished the game with a 10-2 advantage in corners. Providence goalkeeper Teddy Benbow achieved four saves.
Both goals for the Argos were scored by Tomeu Nebot-Schmalfeld, who has tallied eight of the 22 goals scored by Providence this season. Nebot-Schmalfeld put in the opening goal on Friday at 24:56. He was assisted on the play by Jose Gonzalez. Nebot-Schmalfeld added the second goal at 37:08 after a turnover by the Geoducks near the edge of the 18-yard box.
Evergreen worked to press forward in the second half. The Geoducks gained success late in the game, as Gino Badalow cleared away a shot by
Emmanuel Nicasio (Sr., M) at 79:45 and Benbow added a save on a shot by
Juan Mendez (Jr., M) at 80:17. Evergreen added a corner kick at 86:46.
The goal by Gallegos at 89:26 was on a 30-yard shot from the left side. He was assisted with two quick passes.
Kevin Jimenez (So., F) brought down a lengthy pass from midfield and made a short pass to his right to
Sage Scheuerell. The next pass went quickly from Scheuerell out to Gallegos, who gained control and shot.
Nebot-Schmalfeld topped all players with five total shots and three shots on goal. For Evergreen, Gallegos, Mendez, and
Kainoa Wong (Sr., F) each took two shots.
Brendan Gribek (Sr., GK) made one save for the Geoducks.
The Argos improved to 2-12-0 overall, 1-10-0 in the Cascade Collegiate Conference. The Geoducks fell to 3-9-1 on the season and to 3-6-1 in the CCC.
Evergreen will take on Carroll College in Helena, Montana, on Saturday, Oct. 26. Game time is set for 4 p.m. MDT / 3 p.m. PDT.
