PORTLAND, Ore. -- Senior guard
Jourdan Joseph scored 23 points for The Evergreen State College as the Geoducks took on Portland State University on Thursday, Nov. 7 at the Viking Pavilion. Portland State won the game 131-84 to improve to 1-1 on the season. It was an exhibition game for the Geoducks, who remained 0-2.
The Geoducks compete in the NAIA. Portland State is a member of NCAA Division I.
Evergreen will return to regular season play on Saturday, Nov. 9 at Pacific Lutheran University. Game time against the Lutes is set for 4:30 p.m. PST.
Joseph's 23 points led the Geoducks against the Vikings. He was 4 of 10 on field goals and went 14 for 16 at the free throw line. As a team, the Geoducks converted 27 of 33 free throws.
Three other Evergreen players joined Joseph with double-digit scoring at PSU.
Tyler No (So., G) tallied 17 points, while
Bradley Graham (Jr., G) scored 11 points, and
Garret Long (Jr., G/W) contributed 10 points. No was 3 for 3 on 3-point shots, while Long was 2 for 3 and Graham finished 1 for 1. As a team, Evergreen sank 11 of 19 long-range shots (57.9%), including 7 of 11 (63.6%) in the second half.
Nathan Behr grabbed a team-high nine rebounds for the Geoducks. Graham provided five assists. Joseph, Graham, Behr, and
Zach Jefferson (Jr., G) each registered two steals.
Ismail Habib was Portland State's top scorer with 29 points. Hayden Curtiss added 17 points and Jaylin Henderson earned 15 points. Habib was 10 of 16 from the field, including 9 of 11 on 3-point shots. The Vikings shot 68.4% on field goals (52 of 76) during the game and made 15 of 29 three-point attempts (51.7%). PSU was 12 of 18 on free throws (66.7%).Â
Qiant Myers supplied the Vikings with 14 assists. Shane Nowell and Kelcy Phipps each claimed three steals.
Portland State surged out to a 13-0 lead. After Joseph answered with a basket and a foul shot, the Vikings added a 16-0 run for a 29-3 advantage with 13:18 left in the half. Evergreen scored the next four points.
The Geoducks went on a 7-0 run of their own late in the half to pull within 56-32 following a 3-point basket by
Daniel Thomas (Sr., G) with 1:21 on the clock. Portland State added a trio of 3-point baskets in the final 1:05 to grab a 65-32 halftime advantage. The Vikings outscored Evergreen 66-52 in a high-scoring second half for both teams.
