Boston Jr. Leads Evergreen with 15 Points in Loss at PLU

TACOMA, Wash. -- Jerry Boston Jr. (Sr.) scored 15 points to lead The Evergreen State College against Pacific Lutheran University in men's basketball on Saturday, Nov. 9, but the Lutes defeated the Geoducks 92-61. Henry Smith topped Pacific Lutheran with 19 points.

The Lutes, who were playing their regular season opener, moved to 1-0. Evergreen, which played at Portland State University in an exhibition game on Thursday, fell to 0-3. 

Joining Boston Jr. in double figures for the Geoducks was Solomon Campbell (Jr., F), who scored 10 points. Tyler No (So., G) provided Evergreen with eight points and Zach Jefferson (Jr., G) added seven points. Boston Jr., and Jourdan Joseph (Sr., G) each grabbed five rebounds. Garret Long (Jr., G/W) contributed four steals, while No was credited with two steals.

Smith's 19 points led five Lutes with 10 or more points. Miles Nash supplied 14 points, while Brandin Riedel tacked on 13 points. Jason Montes earned 11 points and Dom Perasso finished with 10 points. Smith was 6 for 10 from the field, including 5 of 8 on 3-point shots.

Nash hauled down seven boards for PLU. Smith grabbed six rebounds. Nash and Montes each produced four assists. 

The Lutes shot 53.1% for the game (34 of 64) and made 11 of 25 three-pointers (42.3%). Evergreen was limited to 32.8% shooting (20 of 61). The Geoducks were 17 of 23 at the free throw line (73.9%).

Evergreen scored first on a tip-in by Campbell. The Lutes scored the next five points, ending with a 3-pointer by Smith. PLU held a slim 8-5 lead with 16:13 remaining in the half after Boston Jr. scored on a layup for the Geoducks.

PLU extended its lead to 18-8 on a 3-point basket by Smith with 12:31 left in the half. The Lutes led by as many as 23 points during the half, but Evergreen closed with a 10-0 run to pull within 48-35 at the break. Campbell hit a jumper 17 seconds into the second half to cut PLU's margin to 11 points, but the Geoducks couldn't reduce the lead to single digits.

Evergreen will play an exhibition game at Saint Martin's University on Friday, Nov. 15. Game time is set for 7 p.m. PST.
