OLYMPIA, Wash. -- The Evergreen State College men's soccer team fell to the University of Victoria (B.C., Canada), 4-0, in the season opener for both teams at Geoduck Pitch on Saturday, Aug. 17. Victoria scored two goals in each half to move to 1-0, while the Geoducks fell to 0-1.
Evan Larson scored a pair of goals and provided two assists for the Vikes, as he participated in every goal. He opened the scoring at 23:39 on a shot from 12 yards near the middle of the field following a cross by Takin Marvasti from the left side. Archie Tugwell increased Victoria's lead to 2-0 with a shot at 37;22 on an assist from Larson.
Two goals earned just 36 seconds apart in the second half propelled the Vikes to their final 4-0 margin. Larson registered his second goal of the game at 48:13 on a 12-yard shot from the left. Matthew Pearse set up the goal with a short pass from the middle. Matteus Achadinha completed the scoring at 48:49 on a tap-in at the right post after receiving a cross from Larson.
Gabriel Delgado (Jr., F) almost scored for Evergreen 1:10 into the second half on a blast that hit the center of the crossbar.
Joshua Coetzee (Sr., D) took a shot on a header at 78:58 that was saved by Victoria goalie Callum Weir.
Geoduck goalkeeper
Brendan Gribek earned 11 saves for Evergreen, including several outstanding stops. He registered a tremendous save midway through the first half on a shot by Marvasti. Weir finished with one save. The Vikes outshot Evergreen 32-2 overall and 17-1 in shots on target.
Evergreen will return to action on Saturday, Aug. 31 at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Wash. Game time is set for 7 p.m. (PDT).
