Scheuerell and Juarez Score Goals in 4-2 Loss at Whitman

WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- The Evergreen State College received goals from Sage Scheuerell (Jr., M) and Kolby Juarez (So., M) in a 4-2 loss at Whitman College from NCAA Division III on Saturday, Aug. 31. Evergreen, which competes in the NAIA, fell to 0-2. Whitman improved to 1-0.

Jacob Burrill scored a hat-trick with three goals for Whitman. He also contributed one assist. Riki Kobayashi earned a goal and an assist for the Blues.

Whitman took a 2-0 lead on a pair of goals by Burrill. He scored into the high left corner of the net at 11:46 and added the next goal at 29:16. Oliver Dickson assisted on the opening goal. Kobayashi assisted the second goal.

The Geoducks pulled within 2-1 on Scheuerell's goal just over a minute later. It was an unassisted goal to the lower left corner. The Blues continued to lead by a single goal at halftime.

It took over 31 minutes in the second half before either team changed the score. At 76:47, Kobayashi gave Whitman a 3-1 advantage as he shot low and toward the middle of the goal. Burrill provided the assist.

Evergreen cut the margin to 3-2 when Juarez hit the upper right corner of the net at 81:21 with an assist from Raymundo Curiel (Sr., D). Burrill added an insurance score for the Blues about one minute later on an unassisted shot.

The Geoducks outshot Whitman 16-13, but the Blues claimed a 7-6 edge in shots on target. The game included seven yellow cards, with three on Evergreen and four on Whitman. 

Gabriel Delgado (Jr., F) of Evergreen led all players with six total shots. He took two shots on goal. Burrill topped Whtiman with five shots, including three shots on goal.

Goalie Brendan Gribek (Sr.) played all 90 minutes and registered two saves for the Geoducks. Whitman goalies Niclas Isensee and Lucas Haigh each played 45 minutes in goal. Haigh earned three saves in the second half.

Evergreen will play at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon, on Saturday, Sept. 7. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. PDT.
