Peyton Rhyne (Sr., D) scored two goals and provided an assist, but The Evergreen State College fell to the University of the Fraser Valley (Canada), 4-3, on Thursday, Aug. 22 at Geoduck Pitch. It was the season opener for the Geoducks.
Fraser Valley put a point on the scoreboard just 2:12 into the game. Kiana Langston recorded the goal for the Cascades on a shot from five yards to the lower left corner. Kenzie Fitzgerald crossed the ball from the left side to earn an assist.
The Geoducks tied the score at 1-1 when Rhyne converted a penalty kick at 33:56. UFV goalkeeper Addy Chen committed a foul near the edge of the penalty area. Rhyne sent the ball past Chen on the penalty kick. The teams remained tied at halftime.
Rhyne connected on her second goal early in the second half at 46:41. She shot from 25 yards into the net, giving Evergreen a 2-1 lead. The Cascades equalized the score at 2-2 on a goal by Jaya Baims about five minutes later with an assist from Gursimran Sekhon.
The score remained 2-2 for roughly thirty minutes before UFV took the lead on a penalty kick by Eesha Muldaliar at 82:42. She scored against Evergreen goalie
Melina Grijalva after a defender committed a foul near the top of the 18-yard box.
Fraser Valley quickly expanded its lead on a goal by Jaspreet Deol. Kenzie Fitzgerald assisted on the play at 83:53.
Evergreen made things close when
Brieanna Dell hit the net with a goal, assisted by Rhyne, at 86:26. The Geoducks had several offensive restarts in the closing minutes, but were unable to create a tying score.
The Cascades outshot Evergreen 15-13 overall and held a slim 8-7 edge in shots on goal. Grijalva, who played the final 45 minutes in goal, registered three saves for the Geoducks. Evergreen starting goalie
Anna Varela earned one save in the first half. For UFV, Chen was credited with three saves.
In the first half, the Cascades were called for 15 fouls and the Georducks committed three fouls. For the game, UFV had 23 fouls and Evergreen had 10.
The Geoducks will play an exhibition game at St. Martin's University in Lacey, Washington, on Thursday, Aug. 29. Game time is set for 11 a.m. (PDT).
