GREAT FALLS, Mont. -- For the second consecutive match,
Molly Packer (Jr., DS/L) supplied the Geoducks with a double-digit total for digs, but The Evergreen State College fell to Ottawa University (Ariz.) 3-0 at the University of Providence Tournament on Friday, Aug. 23 at the McLaughlin Center Gymnasium. Packer registered 13 digs, giving her 32 total digs in Evergreen's two games.
Ottawa won the match 25-13, 25-22, 25-12 to improve to 1-0 on the season. Evergreen moved to 0-2. The Geoducks will take on the University of Providence for the second time in the tournament on Saturday, Aug. 24 at 1 p.m. MDT/12 p.m. PDT and will play Montana State University Northern on Saturday at 3 p.m. MDT/2 p.m. PDT. In Friday's first match, Providence downed the Geoducks, 3-0.
Maloree Calzadillas (Sr., S) finished the match with 11 assists and seven digs for the Geoducks.
Lucendy Perez (Sr., OH) also earned seven assists. Perez and Kiayah Brown (Sr., MB) each contributed four kills. Brown achieved a .300 hitting percentage.
Marin Collins (So., MB) had four total blocks with one block solo and three block assists for the Geoducks.
Sophia Scroggins (So., OPP/MB) added three total blocks.
For Ottawa, Lauren Wamsley led the Spirit with 15 kills and 12 digs. Kaitlin Brown provided 11 kills, 14 digs, and a .421 hitting percentage, while Katy Shockey earned nine kills. Logan Kuehn recorded 21 assists. The Spirit accumulated nine service aces, led by three each from Wamsley and Beatriz Paolinetti.
In the first set, Evergreen led 4-2 after a hitting error by the Spirit, but Ottawa countered with a 6-1 run to take an 8-5 edge. The Geoducks scored next before Ottawa took control of the set with a 10-1 run.
The second set was very competitive, and Evergreen owned a 10-5 lead. The Geoducks' early scoring spree included a block and a kill by Scroggins for two of the points. Ottawa tied the score at 12-12, but Evergreen took a 14-12 advantage with back-to-back points.
Later, the Geoducks led 19-16 on a block by Kiayah Brown and 22-19 following a serving error by the Sprit. Ottawa scored the final six points of the set for a 25-22 win.
Evergreen trailed by a slim 6-4 margin after 10 points in the third set. The Spirit tallied 14 of the next 18 points to grab an 18-8 lead. Ottawa grabbed the set 25-12.
