Montez Scores 21 Points as Evergreen Defeats Yotes 55-52

OLYMPIA, Wash. -- The Evergreen State College trailed 42-33 after three quarters, but the Geoducks outscored College of Idaho 22-10 in the fourth quarter for a 55-52 win in a Cascade Collegiate Conference game at the Costantino Recreation Center on Saturday, Jan. 11. The Geoducks took the lead for good at 51-50 on a pair of free throws by Sydney VanNess (Sr., G/F) with 2:06 left.

Mikail Montez (Sr., F/C) topped Evergreen with 21 points and also provided eight boards and three assists. She was 9 for 13 on field goals. VanNess scored 16 points and led the Geoducks with nine rebounds. Allison DeBerry (Sr., G) tallied 10 points and a game-high six assists to go with three steals. Jalyn Sackrider (Sr., G/F) earned eight rebounds and blocked five shots. Evergreen attained a 40-24 rebounding margin. 

The Geoducks improved to 2-9 overall, 2-7 in the CCC. College of Idaho dropped to 8-6, 6-3 in the CCC.

Evergreen scored the first 13 points of the fourth quarter to surge into a 45-42 lead. The run featured six points by Montez, including a 3-point basket to cut the lead to a single point. VanNess added a jumper at the 6:27 mark to give TESC a 43-42 advantage and she added two free throws with 5:51 to go.

C of I tallied the next six points and held a 48-45 lead after Ashton Adamson sank a jump shot with 4:29 on the clock. Montez hit a layup on Evergreen's next possession and tacked on another layup with 2:56 remaining to give the Geoducks a 49-48 edge. Brooke Beresford put the Yotes in front 50-49 with a layup before the two free throws by VanNess with 2:06 to play brought Evergreen back into the lead.

Thuyvi Tran (Sr., G) sank two free throws with 1:12 left for a 53-50 advantage. Taryn Riley of the Yotes made a jumper with 51 seconds left. Evergreen secured the win with one free throw by VanNess with about 10 seconds left and two free throws by DeBerry with 1.6 seconds on the clock. DeBerry's free throws followed a defensive rebound after Beresford missed a jump shot with four seconds to go.

Riley led College of Idaho with 14 points. Beresford chipped in 12 points and six rebounds, while Adamson scored 11 points and led all players with 10 boards. Adamson also registered a game-high four steals. 

Evergreen shot 46.7% from the field (21 of 45) including 3 of 9 on 3-point shots. The Geoducks were 10 of 14 (71.4%) at the free throw line. Evergreen limited the Yotes to 28.1% shooting (16 of 57), including just 6 of 29 (20.7%). C of I was 5 of 24 on 3-pointers (20.8%) and made 15 of 20 free throws.

The Geoducks scored the game's first four points and led 8-5 following a layup by DeBerry with 5:27 left in the opening quarter. The Yotes earned a 9-7 lead after baskets by Beresford and Adamson, creating the first of five lead changes during the quarter. College of Idaho was in front 17-13 at the start of the second quarter.

College of Idaho's lead reached 19-13 on two free throws by Lainee Houillon with 8:51 left in the half. Evergreen countered with a 9-0 run that featured four points from Montez and a 3-pointer by DeBerry to take a 22-20 lead. TESC also led 24-22 before the Yotes ended the second quarter with a 7-0 run.

Evergreen recorded the first four points of the second half and eventually tied C of I at 33-33 on a jumper by VanNess with 4:10 left in the third quarter. The Yotes put in the final nine point of the quarter, ending with a 3-pointer by Anna Mooney with 46 seconds remaining.

The Geoducks will play at Corban University in Salem, Oregon, on Friday, Jan. 17. Game time for the CCC match-up is slated for 5:30 p.m. PST.
