Sackrider Registers Double-Double, but Corban Wins 73-58

SALEM, Ore. -- Jalyn Sackrider (Sr., F/C) of The Evergreen State College scored 14 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for a double-double, but Corban University defeated the Geoducks 73-58 in a Cascade Collegiate Conference women's basketball game on Friday, Jan. 17. Allison DeBerry (Sr., G) also earned 14 points for Evergreen, while Sydney VanNess (Sr., G) tallied 13 points.

Sackrider, DeBerry, and VanNess combined for 41 points while hitting 6 of 12 three-point shots for Evergreen. In addition to leading all players with her 13 boards, Sackrider registered two steals and blocked a shot. DeBerry hauled down four rebounds to go with three assists and two steals. Also for the Geoducks, Thuyvi Tran (Sr., G) was credited with seven points and five rebounds.

For Corban, Alyssa Wyllie and Lizzy Bennett each scored 16 points. Tori Younker added 11 points for the Warriors. Madison Hodnett recorded eight points and 10 rebounds. Jenna Albrecht supplied Corban with five rebounds and five assists, while Sevennah Van De Riet achieved seven rebounds.

The Warriors shot 49.1% from the field (27 of 55) and made 12 of 23 shots from 3-point range (52.2%), while sinking 7 of 10 free throws. Corban limited Evergreen to 28.2% shooting (20 of 71), including 36.8% (7 of 19) on 3-pointers. The Geoducks converted 11 of 14 free throws (78.6%). The Warriors held a 46-36 rebounding edge.

Corban's advantage in field goal shooting and rebounding allowed the Warriors to overcome 23 turnovers, while Evergreen lost the ball 14 times. The Geoducks accumulated nine steals, while the Warriors stole the ball just six times.

The Warriors took a 7-2 lead on a layup by Bennett with 7:09 remaining in the first quarter. Evergreen battled back to within 11-10 following a pair of free throws by DeBerry with 4:04 on the clock. Corban expanded the margin to 16-10, but a 3-pointer by VanNess at the 50-second mark and a jumper by DeBerry with five seconds left reduced the Warriors' advantage to 16-15 at the end of the quarter.

DeBerry added a 3-pointer to start the second quarter, giving Evergreen an 18-16 lead. Corban answered with an 8-0 run, including 3-point baskets by Gemma LaVergne and Wyllie to move in front 24-18. A bit later, LaVergne tacked on another trifecta for a 27-20 margin with 7:01 left in the half. Corban owned a 37-31 lead at the break after Sackrider hit a 3-pointer with five seconds to go.

Corban outscored Evergreen 21-9 in the third quarter to grab a 58-40 lead. In the fourth quarter, the Geoducks gained an 18-15 scoring edge on the Warriors. TESC pulled within 60-46 on a jumper in the paint by Sackrider with 8:25 remaining. The Warriors followed with an 11-1 run to take control. The Geoducks tallied 11 of the game's final 13 points.

The Warriors upped their record to 7-10 on the season, 5-6 in the CCC. The Geoducks moved to 2-10 overall, 2-8 in the CCC.

Evergreen will play at Bushnell University in Eugene, Oregon, on Saturday, Jan. 18. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m. PST.
