EUGENE, Ore. -- The Evergreen State College placed four players in double figures, led by
Jalyn Sackrider (Sr., F/C) with 19 points, 12 rebounds, and four blocked shots, as the Geoducks defeated Bushnell University 64-56 in a Cascade Collegiate Conference game on Saturday, Jan. 18. Joining Sackrider with double digit scoring were
Sydney VanNess (Sr., G/F) with 15 points, plus
Abby Mundy (Sr., G) and
Thuyvi Tran (Sr., G), both with 11 points.
Evergreen led by 15 points early in the third quarter but trailed briefly in the fourth quarter before outscoring the Beacons 12-3 in the final 6:05. The Geoducks improved to 3-10 on the season, 3-8 in the CCC. Bushnell slipped to 6-12 overall, 5-7 in the CCC.
Sackrider was 8 of 17 on field goals, including 3 of 6 from 3-point range. She is averaging 12.7 points and 10.4 rebounds per game this season.
Mundy grabbed eight rebounds against the Beacons, while Tran recorded seven boards. Tran and
Allison DeBerry (Sr., G) were each credited with four assists for the Geoducks. Tran also contributed three steals.
Libby Mathis topped Bushnell wth 17 points and 17 rebounds. She also blocked two shots to go along with two steals. Ayden Krupke chipped in 12 points and eight rebounds for the Beacons. Nevaeh Lopez earned four assists.
Evergreen held Bushnell to 27.9% field goal shooting (19 of 68). The Beacons were 6 of 27 (22.2%) on 3-pointers. Evergreen shot 37.5% for the game (21 of 56), including 9 of 18 (50.0%) from behind the arc.
The Geoducks secured a 17-9 lead in the first quarter after tallying the game's first five points. VanNess opened the game with a 3-pointer and scored 10 points during the quarter.
In the second quarter, Bushnell pulled within six points twice, including 20-14 after Libby Mathis completed a traditional 3-point play with 8:20 left. Evergreen countered with a 7-0 run to achieve a 27-14 edge with 4:52 on the clock. The Geoducks led 35-25 at halftime.
A jumper by Sackrider and a 3-pointer from Tran increased the TESC lead to 40-25 at the 8:35 mark of the third quarter. Evergreen remained in front by double digits for the rest of the quarter, which ended with the Geoducks holding a 52-40 edge.
The Beacons rallied with a 13-0 run to start the final quarter and grab a 53-52 advantage with 7:12 to go. Lopez scored six points and Krupke added five points during the run.
Evergreen regained the lead at 54-53 on a layup by VanNess, but Bushnell tied the score with a free throw by Rose Gwillim with 5:49 left. Sackrider broke the tie with a 3-pointer at the 4:26 mark and the Geoducks led the rest of the game. Evergreen sank 6 of 8 free throws in the final 1:04 to expand a 58-56 lead.
The Geoducks will play at Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston, Idaho, on Friday, Jan. 24. Game time is set for 5 p.m. PST.
