OLYMPIA, Wash. --
Rosario Olvera (Fr., DS) registered a match-high 14 digs for The Evergreen State College against #1-ranked Eastern Oregon University on Saturday, Oct. 11, but the Mountaineers defeated the Geoducks 3-0 in Cascade Collegiate Conference action. Eastern Oregon, which tops the NAIA Women's Volleyball Poll, won 25-10, 25-7, 25-8 to advance its record to 20-0 on the season, 12-0 in the CCC.
The Geoducks fell to 1-15 overall, 1-11 in the CCC. Twelve of Evergreen's losses have been to opponents ranked in the NAIA Poll or receiving votes at the time they played the Geoducks.
While Olvera led the Geoducks on defense,
Zofia Formella (So., MB) provided Evergreen with four kills.
Ashley Walker Campbell (Sr., OPP) tacked on three kills and three digs.
Jayden Vaimaona (Jr., S) supplied seven assists and seven digs.
Keira Vaughn topped EOU with eight kills, while Kiauna Mack added seven kills. Kate Stidham registered 16 assists for the Mountaineers. Brooklyn Willard was credited with six kills and made 13 digs. Ava Semprimoznik contributed 11 assists and 10 digs.
In the first set, Evergreen took a 2-0 lead on two kills by Walker Campbell. Eastern Oregon scored the next four points, including one kill each by Mack and Womack. A bit later, the Geoducks trailed 8-4 before a kill by
Mikayla Kelly (Grad., MB) cut the margin to three points.
The Mountaineers countered with an 11-0 run to secure a 19-5 advantage. The final 10 points of the offensive surge were earned while Semprimoznik was serving. The run included four kills by Vaughn. A kill by
Maya Ware (Fr., MB/OPP) ended EOU's string of points. The opening set featured several lengthy rallies, including a point won by the Geoducks on a combo block by Kelly and Walker Campbell late in the set. EOU won the set 25-10.
A service ace by Formella that went off the next cord tied the second set for Evergreen at 3-3. Eastern Oregon responded by putting together an 11-0 run for a 14-3 edge. Womack was the server on 10 of the points, including one service ace.
The third set began with a 5-1 surge by EOU. The Geoducks pulled within 6-3 on a kill by Vaimaona, and reduced the Mountaineers' lead to 6-5 on an attacking error by EOU. Later, Eastern Oregon held an 11-5 advantage before ending the match with a 14-3 run.
Evergreen will play at Walla Walla University on Friday, Oct. 17. Match time is set for 2 p.m. PDT in College Place, Washington.
