Formella Provides Geoducks with Six Kills against #8 Corban

OLYMPIA, Wash. -- Zofia Formella (So., MB) achieved six kills and produced two service aces for The Evergreen State College, but #8-ranked Corban University defeated the Geoducks 3-0 in a Cascade Collegiate Conference match on Friday, Oc.t 24 at the Costantino Recreation Center. Corban won 25-12, 25-13, 25-14, as the Warriors improved to 18-4 overall, 12-3 in the CCC. 

Formella led Evergreen's offensive attack with her six kills and a .248 hitting percentage, as she had just one attacking error on 18 total attacks. Sophia Scroggins (Jr., OPP/MB) added five kills for the Geoducks. Jayden Vaimaona (Jr., S) supplied 11 assists, while Sue Losey (Fr., S/RS) earned seven assists. Amaialyne Cepeda (Sr., DS/L) contributed eight digs and two service aces. 

Evergreen fell to 1-18 on the season, 1-14 in CCC action. Fifteen of the Geoduck's losses have been to opponents ranked in the NAIA Women's Volleyball Poll or receiving votes at the time they played Evergreen.

For Corban, Kendra Bittle accumulated 11 kills and no attacking errors while claiming a .647 hitting percentage. Emma Bishoff tacked on 10 kills and a .471 hitting percentage. Makayla Roginski finished with eight kills and five digs. Kaile'a Ontai topped the Warriors with 14 digs. Abby Guindy led all players with 20 assists.

The Warriors surged out to a 9-0 lead in the first set, including two kills each by Bittle and Roginski. Walker Campbell of Evergreen broke the run with a kill assisted by Vaimaona. A bit later, Corban led 10-3 before Formella registered a kill for the Geoducks and then provided Evergreen with a service ace to cut the margin to 10-5. The Warriors answered with a 6-0 run on their way to a 25-13 win.

Another quick start by Corban in the second set gave the visitors an 11-2 lead after a kill by Roginski. The Geoducks moved within 12-5 on a 3-1 run that included a service ace by Losey. Corban followed with a 6-1 surge to increase its lead to 18-6 before taking the set 25-12.

In the third set, Evergreen grabbed an 8-7 lead on a service ace by Cepeda. Corban grabbed a 12-9 edge on a combo block by Addison Mills and Roginski, but a kill by Formella cut the Warriors' advantage to 12-10. The Warriors tallied the next five points in a 7-1 run to take a 19-11 lead. Formella responded with a kill and a service ace to pull Evergreen within 19-13. Corban scored six of the next seven points to win the set.

Evergreen will remain at home to take on Bushnell University in a CCC match on Saturday, Oct. 24. The action is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. PDT.
