Lopez Scores for Geoducks in 1-0 Win over Providence

GREAT FALLS, Mont. -- Alex Lopez (Sr., D) of The Evergreen State College scored the game's only goal as the Geoducks defeated the University of Providence 1-0 in a Cascade Collegiate Conference men's soccer game on Saturday, Oct. 4. Evergreen goalkeeper Tom Cole (Jr.) played all 90 minutes to earn a complete-game shutout.

The win at Argo Field improved Evergreen to 1-7-0 on the season and to 1-4-0 in the CCC. Providence slipped to 3-5-2 overall, including 3-2-1 in the CCC.

Lopez scored on a four-yard header near the right post at 28:36. He was assisted on the play by Alan Miranda and Anthony Diaz. 

Tom Cole earns a save for the Geoducks.Soon after Evergreen scored, Pedro Rodriguez of the Argos took a shot that was blocked at 29:47. Lopez of Evergreen forced a save by Providence goalie Andrew Schoenen at 31:54. Damien Rodriguez (Fr., F) of the Geoducks placed a shot on target shortly before halftime at 44:36 that caused Schoenen to make another save. 

Evergreen kept the 1-0 lead for the remainder of the game. The Geoducks finished with a 10-9 advantage in total shots and a 5-2 margin in shots on goal. Evergreen earned a 5-1 edge in corner kicks. Kolby Juarez (Jr., M) was credited with a game-high five total shots. Rodriguez and Hugo Gil each provided Providence with two total shots.

Cole recorded two saves while claiming his first shutout for Evergreen. He achieved one save in the first half, and added his second save with 3:39 left in the game following a shot by Sherry Msuku Jr. of Providence. Schoenen made four saves for the Argos.

Evergreen is set to battle Bushnell University on Friday, Oct. 10. Game time in Eugene, Oregon, is set for 7 p.m. PDT.
