PORTLAND, Ore. --
Kenzel Massey (So., G) of The Evergreen State College scored 11 points, including three 3-point baskets, but Portland State University won 90-61 in an exhibition men's basketball game for the Geoducks on Wednesday, Nov. 19 at the Viking Pavilion. The game counted for Portland State, which competes in NCAA Division I and the Big Sky Conference. The Vikings improved to 3-2 on the season. Evergreen, a member of the NAIA and the Cascade Collegiate Conference, remained 0-2 overall.
Massey led Evergreen in scoring, while
Jacob Laff (So., W) added 10 points, and
Zach Jefferson (Sr., G) tallied nine points. Laff hit 4 of 5 field goals, including 2 of 3 three-point attempts. Jefferson matched Massey by connecting on a trio of 3-pointers.
Tony Frohlich-Fair (Sr., W) provided the Geoducks with seven points and a team-high seven rebounds.
Jordan Smalls (Jr., G) grabbed four rebounds, while Massey supplied three boards. Jefferson earned two steals.
Four PSU players scored in double figures. Jaylin Henderson topped all players with 24 points, as he made 7 of 11 field goals and went 9 for 9 at the free throw line. Henderson also claimed a game-high seven assists to go with seven rebounds.Kelcy Phipps and Terri Miller Jr. each contributed 17 points. Phipps was 6 for 10 from the field, including 5 for 8 on 3-pointers. Keyon Kensie Jr. finished with 13 points.
Miller Jr. paced all players with 14 rebounds. He also achieved four assists, one block, and two steals. Tre-Vaughn Minott added 13 rebounds, while Kensie Jr. was credited with 10 boards, two assists, and one steal.
Neither team scored until almost two minutes into the game, when Henderson recorded a traditional three-point play on a layup and a foul shot with 18:09 on the clock. The Vikings eventually held a 13-0 lead with 13:46 left in the half. Henderson earned eight points during the opening run.
Gabriel Wigginton (Jr. W) scored for Evergreen at the 13:39 mark in a 3-point basket to end PSU's offensive surge. The Geoducks cut the margin to 13-7 just over a minute later following two free throws by
Tyler No (Jr., G) and a pair of free throws by Massey.
Evergreen pulled within 15-10 on a 3-pointer by Massey with 11:31 remaining in the half. Later, the Geoducks reduced the deficit to 17-16 with 9:13 to play in the half after Masey added two more 3-pointers.
The Vikings scored the next four points for a five-point lead. Evergreen trailed by a slim 21-19 margin after
Kohrey Bridges (Sr., F) provided the Geoducks with a 3-point basket as the clock reached 7:55.
Portland State answered with a 12-0 run to take a 33-19 advantage with 4:58 left. The run included six points by Kensie Jr. and four points by Henderson. A bit later, Evergreen pulled within 35-27 on a fastbreak layup by Smalls. The Vikings tallied the final five points of the half for a 40-27 lead. PSU gradually pulled away in the second half.
Evergreen connected on 22 of 67 field goals (32.8%) during the game, while making 11 of 37 three-pointers (29.7%). The Geoducks sank 6 of 10 free throws. Portland State shot 46.5% on field goals (33 of 71) and went 8 of 26 from 3-point range (30.8%). The Vikings converted 16 of 21 free throws (76.2%) and earned a 58-31 rebounding edge.
The Geoducks will play two additional exhibition games this week. On Friday, Nov. 21, Evergreen will take on Seattle Pacific University in Seattle, Washington, at 7 p.m. PST. The Geoducks will take on nearby rival St. Martin's University in Lacey, Washington, on Saturday, Nov. 22 at 6:30 p.m. PST.
