SEATTLE, Wash. --
Tony Frohlich-Fair (Sr., W) scored 19 points to lead The Evergreen State College against Seattle Pacific University, but the Falcons won 90-76 in an exhibition game for the Geoducks on Friday, Nov. 21. Trace Evans matched Frohlich-Fair with 19 points for Seattle Pacific.
The game counted for the Falcons, who evened their record at 1-1. Evergreen remained 0-2 on the season. SPU competes in NCAA Division II and the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC), while the Geoducks are members of the NAIA and the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC).
Evergreen trailed by just four points, 66-62, after
Jayson Mathews (Jr., G) scored on a fastbreak for the Geoducks, was fouled, and hit the free throw with 9:42 remaining in the game. SPU led by a 78-64 margin with 5:29 left in the game following a pair of free throws by Evans.
The Geoducks pulled within 80-72 on a fastbreak layup by Frohlich-Fair with 2:55 left, and cut the Falcons' lead to 83-75 when
Gabriel Wigginton (Jr., W) hit a free throw with 1:26 to play. Seattle Pacific ended the game with a 7-1 run.
Frohlich-Fair was 6 of 11 from the field and 6 for 9 at the free throw line. He was joined in double-digit scoring for the Geoducks by
Kenzel Massey (So., G) and
Jordan Smalls (Jr., G). Massey scored 12 points and hit two 3-point baskets, while Smalls added 11 points, including two 3-pointers. Massey led Evergreen with four rebounds and three steals to go along with one assist. Mathews and Wigginton each produced three assists. Mathews and
Jemoi Davis (Sr., W) both registered two steals.
Evans finished 7 of 12 from the field and 5 for 6 at the free throw line for the Falcons. He also grabbed a game-high 10 boards. Three other SPU players scored in double figures, as Aengus Sutherland earned 15 points, Henry Sandberg chipped in 14 points, and Grant Coleman supplied 12 points. Sutherland was 7 for 7 on field goals, while Sandberg and Grant Coleman each put through two 3-point shots. Sandberg accumulated nine rebounds. Coleman was credited with eight rebounds, seven assists, and six points.
Seattle Pacific scored the first six points of the game, all on shots by Evans, who sank two free throws and two field goals. Evergreen cut the margin to 6-3 with a 3-pointer by Smalls, but SPU led 8-3 with 16:17 on the clock. The Geoducks tied the game 8-8 a minute later when
Bradley Graham (Sr., G) made a 3-point shot.
The Falcons eventually held a 21-13 lead at the 11:25 mark after back-to-back three-pointers by Sandberg, and Brant Heppner. Evergreen reduced the margin to 30-27 on a 3-point basket by
Kohrey Bridges (Sr., F) with 6:00 to play in the half. Seattle Pacific led by 10 points late in the half, but Masey sank a 3-pointer for the Geocucks at 0:28 to pull Evergreen within 41-34 at the break.
Davis put through a 3-point basket for Evergreen just 13 seconds into the second half. SPU answered with a 14-7 run for a 55-44 lead. Evans scored six points during the run, including the final two points on a layup with 14:58 to go. The Geoducks gradually rallied until the traditional three-point play by Mathews on a fastbreak cut the margin to 66-62 with 9:42 left.
Evergreen was 25 of 57 from the field (43.9%) and connected on 9 of 23 long-range shots (39.1%). The Geoducks were 17 of 21 (81.0%) at the free throw line. The Falcons shot 57.4% on field goals (35 of 61) and earned a 35-25 rebounding margin. Seattle Pacific converted 9 of 25 three-pointers (36.0%) and sank 11 of 14 free throws (78.6%)/
The Geoducks will play an exhibition game against nearby rival St. Martin's University on Saturday, Nov. 22. Tipoff at Marcus Pavilion in Lacey, Washington, is set for 6:30 p.m. PST.
