Alaska Anchorage Downs Evergreen in Exhibition for Geoducks

ANCHORAGE,  Alaska -- The University of Alaska Anchorage defeated The Evergreen State College 85-58 in an exhibition game for the Geoducks on Friday, Nov. 7 at Alaska Airlines Center. The game counted for Alaska Anchorage, which improved to 1-2 on the season. Evergreen remained 0-1.

Alaska Anchorage competes in NCAA Division III and is a member of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC). Evergreen is a member of the NAIA and the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC).

Evergreen was led by Tony Frohlich-Fair (Sr., W), who earned 14 points to go along with six assists, two rebounds, and two steals. He was 6 for 8 at the free throw line. Gabriel Wigginton (Jr., W) added 13 points for the Geoducks on 4-of-6 field goal shooting. He hit two 3-point baskets.

Tyler No (Jr.,G) scored seven points for Evergreen and connected on 3 of 4 field goal attempts. Zach Jefferson (Sr., G), Jacob Laff (So., W), and Jayson Mathews (Jr., G) each contributed five points. Jamoi Davis (Sr., W) topped the Geoducks with four rebounds. 

For the Seawolves, Akok Machar scored a game-high 16 points. Elijah Mobley and John McFadden each scored 12 points. McFadden was 6 of 7 on field goals, while Machar was 6 of 12. Bishop Tosi and Jesse Stines both hauled down five rebounds for Alaska Anchorage. Cole Johnson provided eight assists. Machar led all players with five steals.

The Seawolves jumped out to an 18-2 lead in the first five minutes, including seven points by Mobley and five points from Machar. Evergreen scored next on a 3-pointer by Wigginton, but UAA answered with a 11-1 run. The Seawolves owned a 40-21 advantage at halftime.

Alaska Anchorage grabbed a 44-23 lead with 18:41 left in the game following a layup by Tosi. The Geoducks pulled 44-27 on one free throw each by Wigginton and Kenzel Massey (So., G), plus a pair of free throws by Nathan Behr (Sr., F) at the 16:28 mark. Evergreen was unable to get closer.

UAA shot 58.5% from the field during the game (31 of 53) and made 7 of 22 three-point shots (31.8%). The Seawolves were 16 of 21 at the free throw line (76.2%) and gained a 28-21 rebounding edge. Evergreen was held to 35.7% on field goals (15 of 42). The Geoducks connected on 6 of 20 three-pointers (30.0%) and went 22 of 31 (71.0%) at the free throw line.

The teams will play again on Saturday, Nov. 7 in an exhibition game for the Geoducks. Tipoff at Alaska Airlines Center is set for 1 p.m. AST / 2 p.m. PST.
