Zofia Formella (So., MB) earned 13 kills and a .500 hitting percentage, and teammate
Sophia Scroggins (Jr., OPP/MB) added 11 kills, as The Evergreen State College defeated Warner Pacific University 3-0 in Cascade Collegiate Conference volleyball action on Friday, Nov. 7. The Geoducks won 25-15, 25-17, 26-24.
Evergreen honored seniors
Amaialyne Cepeda (DS/L) and
Ashley Walker Campbell (Sr., OPP) following the match. Cepeda played in 44 matches and 135 sets during her two seasons with the Geoducks, while achieving 342 digs. Walker Campbell saw action in 65 matches and 200 sets in three years at Evergreen. Walker Campbell accumulated 302 kills and 109 total blocks during her career.
The Geoducks also downed the Knights 3-2 for a road victory on Saturday, Sept. 27 in Portland, Oregon. Evergreen prevailed in five sets in that match, winning 25-21, 25-21, 16-25, 20-25, 15-10.
With Friday's win, Evergreen concluded the season at 2-22 overall, 2-18 in the CCC. Warner Pacific fell to 0-20 overall, 0-19 in the CCC.
Led by Formella and Scroggins, the Geoducks claimed a .208 team hitting percentage on Friday. Walker Campbell tacked on nine kills to go with three block solos and eight digs. Cepeda provided Evergreen with a match-high 24 digs, while
Jayden Vaimaona (Jr., S) registered 13 digs and four service aces.
Sue Losey (Fr., S/RS) contributed 18 assists and Vaimaona was credited with 14 assists.
Evergreen finished with a 39-36 advantage in digs. The Geoducks produced 6.0 team total blocks, while WPU earned 4.0 team total blocks. Evergreen limited the Knights to a .059 hitting percentage.
Josie Schultz topped Warner Pacific with nine kills. Jodecee Jardine provided the Knights with seven kills. Pa'oakalani Payne-Kaeo supplied 16 digs, and Angel Camagay made 13 digs. Payne-Kaeo also led the Knights with 25 assists.
Evergreen held an 11-9 lead in the first set following a block by Walker Campbell. A bit later, a kill by Losey increased the lead to 16-11, and a kill by Scroggins created a 19-11 margin for the Geoducks. Both kills were part of an 8-0 run that expanded the lead to 21-11. Evergreen took the set 25-11.
In the second set, Warner zoomed out to leads of 3-0 and 6-2. The sixth point for the Knights was earned on a kill by Nicole Nikiforets. Evergreen rallied to tie the score at 6-6 and claimed three more ties before taking a 10-9 lead on a kill by
Maya Ware (So., MB/OPP). The teams were tied for the fifth time in the set at 12-12 following a block by Payne-Kaeo.
The Geoducks answered with a 6-1 run for an 18-13 advantage. WPU pulled within four points as late as 21-17. Evergreen scored on the next four rallies, ending with one kill each by Walker Campbell and Formella, to win the set 25-17.
Evergreen trailed 5-2 in the third set after a kill by Naomi Johnson of Warner Pacific. The Geoducks moved within 9-8 on a kill by Walker Campbell, before the Knights tallied three consecutive points for a 12-8 lead. Evergreen answered with a 4-0 run to tie the score. The final three points of the run were gained on service aces by Vaimaona. The teams were tied later in the set at 18-18 and 19-19, but WPU eventually took a 22-19 lead on a kill by Jodecee Jardine.
The Knights also led 24-22, before the Geoducks rallied to close out the match. Three attacking errors by Warner Pacific provided Evergreen with a 25-24 edge. The final point of the match was scored on a combination block by Ware and
Mikayla Kelly (Grad., MB).
