Harder and Glenzel Lead Geoducks against Eastern Oregon

OLYMPIA, Wash. -- Bayleigh Harder (Sr., F/C) scored 16 points and Jenna Glenzel (Sr., G) provided 11 points, nine steals, and eight rebounds for The Evergreen State College, but the Geoducks fell to Eastern Oregon University 106-39 in a Cascade Collegiate Conference game on Saturday, Dec. 20 at the Constantino Recreation Center. Kelsie Siegner topped Eastern Oregon with 15 points and 13 rebounds.

The Mountaineers, who received votes but were not in the Top 25 in the latest NAIA Women's Basketball Poll, improved to 12-0 on the season and to 4-0 in the CCC. Evergreen moved to 0-7 overall, 0-4 in the CCC.

Evergreen scored first on a layup by Glenzel with 9:45 left in the opening quarter. The Geoducks held the 2-0 lead for nearly five minutes before Maggie Smith of EOU made a layup at the 4:55 mark to start a 7-0 run by the Mountaineers. Harder added a free throw and later hit a 3-point shot to cut the margin to 7-6.

EOU held a slim 9-7 advantage with 1:21 left in the first quarter, but the Mountaineers scored the last 10 points of the quarter and the first 10 points of the second quarter for a 29-7 lead. Eastern Oregon gradually increased the margin during the rest of the game.

Harder's 16 points led all players on both teams. Harder also blocked a game-high three shots. Glenzel barely missed a triple double and set a new career-best with nine steals. Jesselle Victo Castillo (Jr., PG) registered a team-high four assist for Evergreen.

The nine steals by Glenzel tied for third on Evergreen's all-time single-game list. The school record is 11 steals by Trinity Betoney against the University of Puget Sound on Dec. 11, 2019.

Siegner of EOU earned her 15 points by hitting 6 of 13 field goals, including two 3-pointers, and by going 1 for 2 at the free throw line. Eleven of her 13 rebounds were on defense. She also provided the Mountaineers with four assists.

Kaiea Waiwaiole tallied 13 points, five rebounds, five assists, and five steals for Eastern Oregon. Kali Kast added 12 points, while Smith and Reigha Niemeyer each achieved 11 points. Raquel Fehringer tied Waiwaiole for the team lead with five assists.

Evergreen struggled on field goals in the first three quarters, connecting on 7 of 42 shots (16.7%). The Geoducks hit 7 of 16 shots (43.8%) during the fourth quarter. Harder and Glenzel each scored seven points in the final 10 minutes.

The Mountaineers shot 57.5% for the game (42 of 73), including 11 for 29 (37.9%) on 3-pointers. EOU was 11 of 16 on free throws (68.8%).

Evergreen will return to action on Friday, Jan. 2 at Bushnell University in Eugene, Oregon. Game time at the Morse Center is set for 5:30 p.m. PST.
