Glenzel Scores 18 Points, but Bushnell Downs Geoducks 72-48

EUGENE, Ore. -- Jenna Glenzel (Sr., G) provided The Evergreen State College with 18 points to lead all scorers, but Bushnell University defeated the Geoducks 72-48 in a Cascade Collegiate Conference women's basketball game on Friday, Jan. 2 at the Morse Center. The teams were tied 17-17 at the end of the first quarter, before Bushnell claimed a 35-24 halftime lead and remained in front throughout the second half. Maddie Gerhart led the Beacons with 15 points.

Glenzel was 6 for 10 on field goals, while earning three rebounds and five steals. Glenzel has produced 40 steals this season, and leads the CCC with 5.0 steals per game.

Bayleigh Harder (Sr., F/C) added 13 points for the Geoducks to go along with seven rebounds and four blocked shots. Jesselle Victo Castillo (Jr., PG) finished with seven points and two assists, while hitting 5 of 6 field goal attempts. Habiba Adama (Fr., G) supplied Evergreen with six points and a game-high nine rebounds. 

On her way to scoring 15 points for Bushnell, Gerhart sank 9 of 9 free throws. She also earned four rebounds and two steals. Sabrina Flowers tallied 14 points and was 5 for 9 on field goals, including 3 for 5 on 3-point shots. She matched Gerhart with four rebounds and two steals. Kenzie Pederson was credited with nine points and a team-high eight rebounds. Ayden Krupke scored eight points and hauled down four boards, while Cienna Tumoine registered six points and six assists.

The Beacons advanced their record to 3-10 on the season, 1-4 in the CCC. Evergreen slipped to 0-8 overall, 0-5 in the CCC.

Bushnell grabbed a 10-5 lead following a free throw by Flowers with 6:44 left in the first half. Evergreen went on a run of its own to tie the score 15-15 on a jumper by Harder with 1:17 on the clock. Ellis Mastel added a layup for the Beacons at the 1:01 mark, and Harder tacked on an offensive rebound and a layup with 43 seconds left, to end the quarter in a 17-17 deadlock.

The second quarter began with an 11-0 surge by Bushnell. The run started with a layup by Flowers just six seconds into the quarter. The run was completed with a 3-pointer by Flowers with 6:27 remaining in the half. Bushnell owned a 14-ponit lead late in the half, but Glenzel sank a 3-point shot for Evergreen with 31 seconds to go, reducing the margin to 35-24 at the break.

Tumoine hit a jumper for the Beacons to open the third quarter. The Geoducks answered with a 6-0 run to pull within 37-30 following a layup by Glenzel as the clock reached 7:35. After each team added two more points, the Beacons put together a 9-0 run for a 48-32 lead after Pederson scored on a 3-pointer with 4:09 left. Bushnell held a 52-38 advantage entering the fourth quarter and gradually expanded the lead over the final 10 minutes.

Evergreen connected on 18 of 60 field goals (30.0%). The Geoducks were 7 of 14 (50.0%) from the field in the third quarter. Evergreen was 4 of 22 on 3-pointers (18.2%) and went 8 for 12 (66.7%) at the free throw line.

Bushnell finished 24 of 60 from the field (40.0%), including 8 for 15 (53.3%) in the second quarter. The Beacons made 3 of 16 shots from 3-point range (18.8%) and sank 21 of 26 free throws (80.8%).

The Geoducks will take on Corban University in Salem, Oregon, on Saturday, Jan. 3. Game time for the CCC match-up is set for 3 p.m. PST.
