OLYMPIA, Wash. -- The Evergreen State College senior guard
Jourdan Joseph scored 16 points and provided six assists, but Southern Oregon University pulled away late in the game for a 96-73 win over the Geoducks on Saturday, Feb. 1 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play at the Costantino Recreation Center. Evergreen trailed by 16 points at halftime before cutting the margin to 65-58 with 11:13 remaining. SOU ended the game with a 31-15 run.
On his way to leading the Geoducks in scoring and assists, Joseph connected on 7 of 8 free throws. He also blocked a shot and recorded one steal.
Zach Jefferson (Jr., G) supplied Evergreen with 12 points, while
Solomon Campbell (Jr., F) contributed nine points and four rebounds.
Jemoi Davis (Jr., W) added six rebounds.
For Southern Oregon, Gabe Reichle tallied 17 points and hit 7 of 14 field goals, including 3 of 8 on 3-pointers. Joe Juhala scored 16 points and Bryce Dyer tacked on 14 points. Mason Whittaker and Liam Clark each scored 12 points for the Raiders. Dyer led SOU with seven rebounds, while Clark grabbed six boards. Elijah Jackson earned seven assists and three steals.
The win upped SOU's record to 14-7 overall, 9-6 in the CCC. Evergreen moved to 1-17 on the season, 1-14 in the CCC.
Southern Oregon led 16-6 following a layup by Reichle with 15:23 to go in the first half. Evergreen went on a 9-3 run to reduce the deficit to 19-15 after Joseph scored on a jumper with 11:55 left. The Raiders tacked on an 11-4 surge of their own to claim a 30-19 advantage with 10:13 on the clock. SOU kept a double-digit lead for the remainder of the half and held a 51-35 lead at the intermission.
Reichle had 12 points at halftime for the Raiders. Joseph topped Evergreen with 10 points after 20 minutes.
Jackson put in a layup for SOU to open the second half. The Geoducks cut the lead to 56-47 with a 12-3 run that ended with a 23-pointer by
Daniel Thomas (Sr., G) on an assist from Joseph with 15:16 on the clock. The Raiders took a 63-51 edge on a pair of free throws by Clark with 13:08 to play.
Evergreen countered with a 5-0 run on a 3-pointer by
Nick Gutierrez (Sr., G) and a pair of free throws by Joseph. After Joseph's free throws, TESC was within 63-56 at the 11:334 mark. A bit later, Evergreen moved within 65-58 on two free throws from Campbell. The Raiders scored the next 22 points to take control of the contest.
SOU shot 43.1% from the field (34 of 64). The Raiders made 11 of 31 three-point attempts (35.5%) and recorded a 40-30 rebounding margin. The Geoducks were 25 of 64 on field goals (39.1%) and hit 9 of 27 three-pointers (33.3%). Evergreen was 14 of 15 at the free throw line (87.5%).
The Geoducks will take on Northwest University in Kirkland, Washington, on Tuesday, Feb. 4. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. PST.
