Mikail Montez (Sr., F/C),
Sydney VanNess (Sr., G/F), and
Jalyn Sackrider (Sr., F/C) each scored 12 points for the Geoducks, but Southern Oregon University, ranked #4 in the NAIA, defeated The Evergreen State College 79-57 in a Cascade Collegiate Conference game on Saturday, Feb. 1. Meghan McIntyre led SOU with 19 points.
Southern Oregon remained undefeated at 21-0, including 15-0 in the CCC. Evergreen fell to 3-14 on the season, 3-12 in the CCC.
Montez also contributed seven rebounds and was 5 for 10 on field goals. VanNess grabbed six rebounds, and Sackrider registered six boards and two blocked shots.
Allison DeBerry (Sr., G) finished with seven points and five assists.
McIntyre was 5 for 9 from the field and went 4 for 6 on 3-pointers. She hit 5 of 6 free throws and contributed four assists. Eliza DiGiulio scored 15 points for the Raiders. Clara Robbins tallied 11 points to go with eight boards. Bridgette McIntyre added 11 points, four rebounds, and five assists.
The Raiders grabbed an 8-2 lead. DeBerry cut the margin to 8-5 with a 3-pointer from the left elbow with 6:37 left in the first quarter. Southern Oregon answered with an 8-0 run, starting with a 3-pointer by DiGiulio, to take an 16-5 lead with 4:30 left. Evergreen pulled within 18-9 on a layup by Montez at the 3:08 mark and moved within 20-11 on a layup by Sackrider with 32 seconds on the clock.
In the second quarter, SOU held a 29-17 advantage during a media timeout at the 4:05 mark. Montez scored on a layup after the timeout, but the Raiders ended the half with a 10-2 run to claim a 39-21 lead at the break.
Evergreen outscored the Raiders 8-7 to start the third quarter. DeBerry hit a jump shot with 5:21 on the clock to pull the Geoducks within 46-29.The Raiders were in front by 18-21 points for most of the quarter and owned a 56-37 edge with 1:08 remaining. SOU tacked on six more points before the end of the quarter on 3-pointers by Meghan McIntyre and Mallory Williams.
The Geoducks got as close as 70-53 with 4:02 left in the fourth quarter following a 3-pointer by VanNess. The trifecta completed a 14-3 run by Evergreen.Â
For the game, Evergreen shot 35.4% from the field (23 of 65). The Geoducks made just 3 of 19 three-point shots (15.8%). The Raiders hit 51.9% of their field goals (27 of 52) and made 12 of 25 three-pointers (48.0%). Both teams performed well at the free throw line, as Evergreen finished 8 for 8 and SOU was 13 of 16 (81.3%). The Raiders gained a 37-31 rebounding margin.
Evergreen will play at Northwest University in a CCC game on Tuesday, Feb. 4. Tipoff in Kirkland, Washington, is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. PST.
