Five Geoducks Reach Double Digits in 74-51 Win over Eagles

KIRKLAND, Wash. -- All five starters scored in double figures as The Evergreen State College defeated Northwest University 74-51 in a Cascade Collegiate Conference women's basketball game on Tuesday, Feb. 4. Sydney VanNess (Sr., G/F) led the Geoducks with 17 points.

The win improved Evergreen to 4-14 overall, 4-12 in the CCC. Northwest fell to 5-17 on the season, 4-12 in the CCC. Evergreen surged out to a 15-0 lead and led 15-2 at the end of the first quarter. The Eagles pulled within 25-17 at halftime, but the Geoducks outscored Northwest 49-34 over the final two quarters to pull away.

On her way to scoring 17 points, VanNess was 8 of 14 on field goals. She also grabbed eight rebounds and earned four assists. Jalyn Sackrider (Sr., F/C) provided Evergreen with 16 points and hauled down six rebounds. Thuyvi Tran (Sr., G) added 14 points to go with three boards and two assists. Tran hit 5 of 9 field goals, including 4 of 8 on 3-pointers.

Mikail Montez (Sr., F/C) and Allison DeBerry (Sr. G) each tallied 10 points for the Geoducks. Montez led Evergreen with nine boards, while DeBerry registered four rebounds and four assists.

Kaleah Madeiros topped Northwest with 15 points, including three 3-point baskets. Saydee Anderson tacked on 11 points and grabbed six boards. Kimberly Carrada Sanchez finished with eight points and four assists, while Ellie De Waard claimed five rebounds.

Evergreen built its 15-0 margin in the first eight minutes of the opening quarter. The early run included six points each by Sackrider and DeBerry. The Eagles scored their first two points with 1:28 remaining in the quarter on a layup by Carrada Sanchez. Northwest made just 1 of 17 shots (5.9%) in the first 10 minutes, including 0 for 11 from 3-point range.

The Eagles pulled within 19-13 on a 3-pointer by Madeiros with 4:57 left in the second quarter. TESC answered with a 4-0 run on two free throws by Sackrider and a layup from VanNess. Katie Snow scored the next four points for Northwest on a pair of free throws at the 2:28 mark and a layup with 27 seconds to play, reducing Evergreen's lead to 23-17. Abby Mundy (Sr., G) added two free throws for the Geoducks seven seconds later.

Tran began the second half with a 3-pointer as Evergreen grabbed a 28-17 lead. Later in the third quarter, Van Ness sank a jump shot to increase the margin to 38-21 with 5:12 on the clock. The Eagles moved within 12 points three times before the quarter ended. Evergreen took a 46-32 lead into the final period.

Anderson scored a layup for NU on the first possession of the fourth quarter. The Geoducks responded with a 17-4 offensive surge to take command. The run began with a 3-pointer by Tran, who also completed the run with a 3-pointer at the 5:39 mark for a 63-38 lead.

The Geoducks hit 42.6% of their shots (26 of 61) and made 9 of 22 from 3-point distance (40.9%). Northwest was held to 30.3% shooting (20 of 66). The Eagles connected on 6 of 32 three-pointers (18.8%). Evergreen achieved a 37-26 rebounding edge.

Evergreen will play at Multnomah in a CCC game on Friday, Feb. 7. Game time in Portland, Oregon, is set for 5:30 p.m. PST.
