OLYMPIA, Wash. --
Sydney VanNess (Sr., G/F) led all players with 19 points, and
Jalyn Sackrider (Sr., F/C) added 15 points, nine rebounds, and eight blocked shots, as The Evergreen State College downed Bushnell University 70-47 in women's basketball during Senior Night at the Costantino Recreation Center on Saturday, Feb. 15. The Geoducks led 38-22 at halftime and continued to hold a comfortable lead throughout the second half.
The win improved the Geoducks to 7-14 overall and to 7-12 in the Cascade Collegiate Conference. Bushenll dropped to 9-16 on the season, 8-11 in the CCC.
VanNess hit 3 of 5 three-point shots and went 4 for 4 at the free throw line on her way to 19 points. She also provided Evergreen with five rebounds and five assists. Sackrider nearly had a triple double. She was 7 of 14 on field goals and added a free throw to help out on offense. In addition, she blocked eight shots in a variety of positions on defense. Seven of her nine boards were earned on the defensive side of the court.
Mikail Montez (Sr., F/C) tacked on 10 points and eight boards for the Geoducks, while hitting 5 of 8 field goals.
Abby Mundy (Sr., G) finished with seven points, while
Thuyvi Tran (Sr., G) and
Honey Let Padasdao (Sr., G) each registered five points and four rebounds.
Allison DeBerry (Sr., G) topped Evergreen with eight assists and Tran contributed five assists.
After the game, Evergreen's eight seniors were honored for their efforts at Geoducks. The seniors are
Maloree Calzadillas (Sr., G/F), DeBerry, Montez, Mundy, Padasdao, Sackrider, Tran, and VanNess.
The leading scorer for the Beacons was Ayden Krupke with 16 points. Mandy Sisul achieved 11 points and hit all three of her 3-point attempts. Nevaeh Lopez scored eight points and was credited with a game-high five steals. Libby Mathis grabbed five rebounds.
Evergreen took a 7-5 lead in the first quarter on a 3-point shot by VanNess with 7:21 on the clock. Later, a 3-pointer from Tran provided the Geoducks with a 14-11 advantage at the 3:32 mark. The basket started a 10-2 run that gave Evergreen a 21-13 advantage entering the second quarter.
Three jumpers by Sackrider increased the Geoducks' margin to 27-13 with 6:46 remaining in the half. Bushnell threatened to rally with a 9-2 run that included a trio of 3-pointers by Sisul, as the Beacons pulled within 29-22. The Geoducks responded with nine unanswered points, starting with a 3-pointer by VanNess, to end the half. Evergreen outscored Bushnell 17-9 in the second quarter.
Montez added two layups for Evergreen early in the third quarter to increase the margin to 42-22 with 8:40 to play. Krupke scored next for the Beacons, but the Geoducks countered with a 9-0 run for a 51-24 advantage with 5:42 left in the quarter. Evergreen owned a 56-33 advantage at the start of the fourth quarter.
For the game, Evergreen shot 47.4% from the field (27 of 57) and made 6 of 15 on 3-point shots (40.0%). The Geoducks sank 10 of 11 free throws (90.9%) and recorded a 43-31 lead in rebounding. Bushnell shot just 28.8% for the game (17 of 59). The Beacons connected on 7 of 18 three-point tries (38.9%) and converted 6 of 10 free throws.
The Geoducks will play at home again on Sunday, Feb. 16, when they will take on Corban University in a CCC game. Tipoff at the Costantino Recreation Center is set for 3 p.m. PST.
