Montez Scores 15 Points in 64-53 Victory over Corban

OLYMPIA, Wash. -- Mikail Montez (Sr., F/C) topped The Evergreen State College with 15 points as the Geoducks earned a 64-53 victory over Corban University on Sunday, Feb. 16 at the Costantino Recreation Center. Jalyn Sackrider (Sr., F/C) provided the Geoducks with 12 points, while Kadance Blankers (Jr., G) added 11 points.

The Cascade Collegiate Conference win improved Evergreen's record to 8-14 overall, 8-12 in the CCC. Corban fell to 10-16 on the season, 8-12 in the CCC.

Montez was 6 of 11 on field goals and grabbed four rebounds. Sackrider hauled down a team-high nine boards, while achieving six assists and six blocked shots. Blankers was 4 for 4 from the field, including 3 for 3 on 3-pointers. Jenna Glenzel (Sr., G/F) tacked on 11 points while Sydney VanNess (Sr., G/F) supplied the Geoducks with seven points and six boards.

Alyssa Wyllie and Teayona Hoard each scored 11 points for the Warriors. Wyllie led Corban with three 3-point baskets. Hoard earned four rebounds. Madison Hodnett contributed nine points and six rebounds. Tori Younker and Jenna Albrecht were each credited with four assists.

The teams were tied 5-5 after five minutes in the first quarter. Corban took a 9-5 lead with 3:48 left following baskets by Hoard and Wyllie. Evergreen responded with as 6-0 run on layups by Glenzel, VanNess, and Blankers to end the quarter with an 11-9 advantage.

Corban took a 16-13 lead in the second quarter on a jump shot by Tayla Yost with 8:07 on the clock. The Geoducks scored the next six points during an 8-2 run for a 21-18 lead following an inside basket by VanNess at the 5:21 mark. The Warriors tied the score with a 3-pointer by Mandie Jensen with 4:21 to go.

Montez put Evergreen in front 24-21 on a basket and foul shot before Younker tied the game by hitting a 3-pointer with 3:13 left in the half. The Geoducks ended the second quarter with an 8-0 run to claim a 32-24 lead at the break.

The Geoducks owned a 38-27 edge after two free throws by Montez with 6:42 to go in the third quarter. The Warriors pulled within 38-22 on three consecutive baskets by Hoard. Evergreen regained momentum with a 3-pointer from Padasdao with 4:34 on the clock. The 3-pointer opened a 12-3 surge by TESC that led to a 50-36 margin with 1:52 to play in the quarter. 

Corban tallied the last four points of the third quarter, and Hodnett scored the first four points in the fourth, as the Warriors cut Evergreen's lead to 50-45 with 8:18 left. A 3-pointer by Blankers and a layup by Montez moved the lead to 55-45.

Hoard sank a 3-pointer for Corban with 5:58 remaining to reduce the lead to 55-48. Evergreen then went on a 9-3 run to claim a 64-51 advantage. The run began with four points for the Geoducks before Wyllie pulled the Warriors within 59-51 on a 3-pointer at the 3:26 mark. Evergreen hit 5 of 6 free throws to extend the margin. Lizzy Bennett scored for Corban with 6.4 seconds left.

Evergreen held a 39-32 rebounding margin and blocked seven shots. The Geoducks shot 43.1% on field goals (22 of 51) and went 16 for 21 at the free throw line (76.2%). Corban connected on 22 of 60 field goals (36.7%) and sank 1 of 4 free throws.

The Geoducks will travel to Caldwell, Idaho, to take on College of Idaho on Friday, Feb. 21. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m. MST / 4:30 p.m. PST.
